Energy. I think the set has to be energetic, flowing with good choons to keep the crowd dancing... and mixing is important... so both i guess :P

me and my boyfriend could listen to the same live set and i walk away saying it was aweomse he walks away saying the mixing sucks. to me, like if you're into it you dont really pay attention to the crossfades inless you are just standing there listening.
I think its all about the track selection, obviously you need something bouncy with energy, i also think stage presence fits in too, if you're up there not reacting to your own music your playing,. or the crowd..then its just not the same.
i love DJ's who get the crowd moving along with the music..makes it that much better
although you mentioned something about the "hottest tunes" umm, for me if it was 1/2 way into the set and all that was being played was anthems, i'd walk away

fresh tunes are always good, but yeah, there's gotta be energy (from both the tunes and the dj), a nice flow and good tunes played. also when a dj does someting new and interesting with their tracks, that always good

For me, track selection and mixing are the 2 most important elements of any set.
My biggest problem, is as a DJ, i always find myself listening to the mixing instead of enjoying myself!

Playing good musics the main thing to me. All my favourite dj's are ones that have amazing collections with diff types of tunes.
Second would be havin some sort of variety and progression in a set, not 170 bpm uk anthems from start to finish. Clarkee as an example could start off uplifting, even drop in trance tunes at 45 then end up savage.
I'd much prefer a set that'd mibbe even start slow and darker then build into 200 bpm + finish. Just keeps me interested.
Like DMS says you become more critical if you mix yourself, but not just of the mixing but the tune choice.
Someone who only plays the latest on IMO that all the big names have cained for months it's not gonna impress me. But if someone has took time in there collection to have the cream of the crop and immense tunes i dont no from all over the world and history of rave music my jaw will drop.
More modern examples of dj's i really rate are Kutski and Haston.
Haston for 3 decks constant buzzin with all the best of hardcore from around europe. Uk's most underrated dj, his dj partner bounceman also has a wkd ear for good music and mixes solid.
Kutski again a real dj who does the unexpected. Hip-hop turntablism, technically unreal and looks hard into what mixes he can pull off.
Someone was sayin when he played glasgow at new year his set included Annie Lennox at one point and finished with gabber. Thats in a club for techno, hard dance etc and he pulled it off and crowd loved it. Takes talent to pull that off, defo a top class dj for the future

My advice is lots of practice. Find your style and perfect it. Feel out the bumps by experimenting new things and what you think sounds good. Then gather some friends around or record it to see how others react to it. Also if you got some DJ friends, let them give their input to see if they can give you some tips or new ideas to try out.
What I love about DJ'ing is everyone has their own style. Straight mixing from one end to the other is boring, a set needs character.

"Variety" - is the key!
A set needs Variety of all styles of music in its genres!
bit of UK, but of freeform, bit of happy & bouncy, and some gabba!
mix it all in the right order then your minted!
for 3 reasons really...
A. The same thing over and over is BORING!!!
B. Shows the DJ knows his stuff when it comes to more then 1 style of music!
C. You never know whos listening... theres bound to be people who are just starting out in the filed! so brainwashing them with one just one style of music is NOT GOOD!!! Its best to expose all styles to give them the bigger picture of what a genre is all about, and therefore they can make up there own minds on there own taste!
Not just that, but its importent for a DJ to do something uquine!!! you know, slap some trademark samples over the top in certain places, to give there trademark feeling on the dance floor of it being "there set!"
the odd classy shit like mixing 2 tracks together in stranges ways to make news sounds that others DJ's havn't done!!!
and sometimes... evan telling a story can be good!
start a set... with tracks singing about trying to find someone... then it progress to tracks singing about finding them, being with them, feeling a state of extacy and then ends with the loose of them... and the down depressing shit! with the mabie a track at the end with a powerful message so that people leave the dance floor with a smile on there face!!!
^^^theres me getting carryed away again^^^ lol
but hey, yeah you get the messege!

Yeah with me it'd be bouncy techno, old gabber and speedcore but i get where your comin from, i love listenin to all kindsa sets and if someone pulled off one like you've wrote there i'd defo give it a listen.
Freeform to gabber i really appreciate when done well, can make lovely progression with the right records from each style.
One thing though if i look at a tracklist and the last songs are the same style as the first songs theres no way i'll listen to it even if its a mate.
Not naming names but loads i see on the forums are like that, or just a couple of cheesy nu style gabber tracks at the end is hardly original.

A set needs to tell a story. If there isn't progression in mood, and dynamics in track selection, things get old. I'd honestly rather hear clang than 3 vocal tracks (regaurdless of how killer they are, or how well they are mixed together) mixed right in a row.
