Are there any sites u lot know of that just introduce Hardcore, i.e. explain the normal bpm & characteristics? I'm doing a presentation for uni on a tune I've gotta make & need a bit of guidance introducing it - if anyone could offer any info they feel is important i'd greatly appreciate it, i.e. "split into genres styles such as Gabba, UK Upfront, Freeform...."
Also is there a mix anywhere with the Arkitech's "Life is a Construct", I need a sample from the beginning of the track and cant find it anywhere to download (In Bonkers 15 Sharkey mixes over the start) I need the bit where it sounds like someones firing a lazer.
Any help appreciated!!

The obvious starting point is of course Wikipedia, but as always with that site, take what you read with a pinch of salt..... often misconceptions get published
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcore_techno DI.fm also has an EDM guide which claims to map out the different genres of music. Thought I would post it before anybody else just so I can say be wary! Very much tongue in cheek, I think it was written by a funky house fan as it does take the mick a bit. There may be some useful snippets too. http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html And, if you can wait until early January, I'm putting together an article for iDance Magazine covering an intro into Hardcore as the start of a regular Hardcore feature in the mag.

I was writing up a guide for happyhardcore.com (was discussed somewhere), which would of included samples, links & refrences, shops ect for each subgenre & style of hardcore! But i kinda lost the document and got carryed away on other projects!
However Give it time and in another year or 2 you will hopfully finnally see something coming from my side! I've got alot planned under my belt and my main goal is to expose the world to electronic music in a more "openminded" light (thats where the slogon "To be openminded... is to open your mind" comes from!)
At the moment though i'm taking 2007 as another study year... i need to brush up on my flash & actionscripting skills, animation & film, graphics & design and then dive head first into the php & perl worlds of webdesin - lol aswell as do more reserach and get involed with other scenes in the trance, house, breatbeat & downtempo indestrys!
At the moment i'm like just a giant vacuum, sucking in all this knowleagde and gaining experience in my arts & craths lol
But hey... it will all be worfit in the end!
By next year I will however be talking to a few pps in diffrent indestrys and try my best to set up multiply myspace acounts - having them all linked via intractive flash movies... each page for each genre with infomaction and refrances aswell as a whole network of "friends" or "buddys" that only refelect to that scene!
In fact ^^^ you can already find some (well, kinda) floating around:
http://www.myspace.com/historyofhardcore Hope that helps

That link was for History of Hardcore events, I don't see how that could help, unless I went to one and asked the DJs there, which I cant do b4 Wednesday! Cheers 4 tryin though.
I'm really looking for a clear definition of each type of Hardcore, what is freeform? What makes it different from say, an upfront Stormtrooper track - nowhere really gives a clear explanation in lamens terms with regards to technology and production techniques, or is there not a very clear line drawn between the two now?

i guess you could start your project with something along these lines
'When you ask someone which genre of electronic music they listen to, you will normaly get the response "trance/techno"...' etc ;p

^ Upfront isn't a genre at all, it's just a word used to describe how fresh the tune is really. Sharkey could say he's playing an upfront set but it wouldn't mean he was about to play Raverbaby records it would just mean he was going to play his newest, freshest tunes... an upfront set :)
Yeah I know I sound like a broken record but it's just one of things that irritates me ;)
Freeform - Lots of acid sounds and also some breakbeats, heavy influence from hard trance with a structure you wouldn't normally give a hardcore track...
Gabber - Not sure what to say... fast, hard electronic music characterised by big fat distorted kicks!
I'm sure someone else can do a much better explaination, but that should give you a general idea :)

Check out my fifth radio show I guess...or just buy it from the Nu Energy mp3 store when it comes out.
Or check out my recent mix November Nights...
I think that has a better clip of it...still, not sure why you want it...

What exactly do you want to know? Hardcore Breaks is nothing more than a progression of the original hardcore vibe from the late 80s/early 90s with more modern production. Of course there are influences from other genres, making it a very diverse style of music, but it always comes back to that rave vibe. Is that what you're looking for? I mean, you can't just have someone tell you about a certain type of music and then you magically know all about how to produce it. It sounds to me like you've bitten off more than you can chew.

I only want to explain about the different types, how is that biting off more than I can chew, that comment was at 95_was_the_time by the way. I don't expect to be able to know how to produce it, just explain what sets each sub-genre apart.
