hypothetically speaking, if i want to sell all my equipment and vinyl that i've paid for, am also i entitled to re-sell legal downloads that i have paid for? i would think so, but... that raises a couple questions i won't deny that.
i've just been thinking lately of selling all my stuff. DJing is an expensive hobby and as fun as it is, it's sucking up a lot of money that could be used for better things. it's just getting to be boring.
and yeah... i was wondering if MP3's can be sold as well. can anyone clarify?

Bit of a dodgy one really. Legally i think the answer is no, but i dont think you would get much hassle if you tried to sell them as long as its the cd you are selling and not a data disc full of mp3's.
Id just do it, worst that will happen is someone will complain, if that happens, stop selling on the net and just sell them to your mates / locals

i assume it'd be legal to sell a single copy, because it's rightfully yours to sell? though i'm no expert, so it's just a guess, not sure how digital copy write laws really work... that being said i don't think anyone would be mad at you for selling the mp3 you purchased, as long as you're not reproducing it and selling it multiple times obviously
also i've been wanting to ask for a while and it's sort of in the same vein, hopefully you don't mind me asking here (not to hijack the thread or anything!)
do you guys think it's okay to download vinyl rips of vinyl you own? what about vinyl you plan to purchase? yes on the former and no on the latter i assume?

I think it would only be legal to sell the one you downloaded...so, like selling a record it's no longer in your collection.
Otherwise, you'd be illegally distributing the mp3 if you kept your original copy.

that's what i was thinking, but who is to say i didn't keep the mp3 on my hard drive or on a CD somewhere?
but then again, who is to say someone who sells a vinyl isn't doing the same thing.
i think it's a really grey area, but just wanted to hear some opinions on the subject anyhow.

^^Good point.
I'd say do it until someone says you're doing something wrong.

My understanding is that your not paying for the actual data, your paying for a non-transferrable licence to listen / play it - in which case you cannot sell it on.
Even if it is a physical product you are paying for, it is illegal to copy music. Unless you sell your hard drive with the original tracks on, you are actually copying the music, which is illegal. It is also illegal to distribute music without the copyright holder's permission. passing it on to somebody either for a price or for free is classed as distribution.
Maybe you can copy / sell it, but you would have to ensure that the correct fee was paid to the correct agencies to pass on to the copyright holders.
Its not really all that grey - just which particular view on why it is wrong you take. As a rule of thumb, if something feels as though it could be illegal, 99% of the time it is!
Saying all that though, I am not a lawyer, and nor do I play one in an over-produced, hammed up american soap opera.

Some of the vinyls i've bought was unplayable/unrippable, So I did that.
I'd say Yes on the first, and Yes on the other, if I'ev already bought it and is onyl waiting for it to arrive

I have downloaded loads of vinyl rips, when i first bought SSL i started ripping all my own vinyl then thought **** that and just started d/l them.
Downloading what you already own is ok i believe!
However i as stated i did not rip all of my own and dowloaded some, the downloaded ones are ok for home use but if in a club the quality is not up to standard.
If i put an mp3 that i had ripped myself on my left TT and then a downloaded one on the right TT believe me you would notice the difference.
I would strongly recommend you rip them yourself if you are wanting quality recordings or if you plan on doing any gigs
