I've just came across a cheap one off record cutting service for all you budding producers out there. For £24 GBP you can have your latest track cut (not pressed) onto a blank record.

Vinylcarvers.com

Just sent my master of to them, I'll let everyone know how the service turns out.

I'm still waiting for the track to be delivered. I got a email saying the track was being cut and that it'll be with me next week. Fingers crossed.

The difference between cutting and pressing is simple.
When you get a record pressed they start with an aluminium disk covered with acetate.
They use an acetate lathe to cut the groove on to the acetate.

The acetate is sprayed with a fine silver nitrate which fills the grooves of the acetate.
The silvered plate is then electro plated with nickel sulphamate electrolyte to create a negetive.
The negetive is plated again to create a positive, then plated once more to create the stamper which goes in the press.

VinylCarvers cut directly on to the vinyl using similar equipment to an acetate lathe.
They heat the blank plate and then cut it on the lathe with a diamond stylus.

So what cutter do you have? i use the Vestax cutter and it works well apart from the run out it all ways seems to run out under the label, i configured the cut zone to fit a standard 5:30 minute track or what ever the track length is tbh but it still does it, i done what the manual says but still no results, any ideas? (any one)

Just got the track back today.
Damn, they've done an excellent job! After I uploaded the track to their ftp, I noticed that the auto clip kicked in on the higher levels, bummer, I thought....but..
They've managed to fix it in the mastering process and it sounds awesome.
The quality of the record is spot on and it plays so well.

I will be using their service again, I'm very happy!!

Just curious to what the wear and tear on that vinyl will be, will it be as good as a full retail 12"? Anyone know?

Apparently (I haven't tested it myself properly yet) they can stand up to as many plays as pressed vinyl. I've heard of people using them for custom scratch records, so from that I'll assume they can stand up to it.

Would they cut a copyrighted mp3?

Only if they don't know it's copyrighted, so er... just don't tell 'em.
Anyway, surely you're allowed to make a back up of any media you own (legally paid download, or rip from a bought cd), as you are with games and cd's .etc. Couldn't hurt to try

You could get away with cutting a single copy of a hardcore MP3 no problem.

I've used a similar company (dubstudio) with excellent results. Played the record probably 30 odd times so far with no loss in quality as of yet.

It beats paying £50-£70 for a rare tune on vinyl, when you could just send them a CD with the track and it'll only cost £28 inc P&P

But how hard is it to get that rare tune on CD, i mean either the full track or .wav/aiff quality

Not sure how it works but i would be willing to bet 192kbps would sound like shit if cut to vinyl

that's called a dubplate
it lasts about 30 plays and doesn't sound as good as a normal vinyl record

be careful with it

most big name producers/DJs used to play these almost exclusively
