okay im pretty illiterate with some parts of computers. One of these illiterate topics is sound cards. Basically what i wanna know is, being a producer, does the sound card i have affect the quality of the sound i record? Or does it just affect how it sounds on MY computer?

It affects the sound going into your computer (ie microphones etc) and also the sound coming out of your puter (usually to speakers/amp etc). If your working in Reason for instance, it will only affect what you hear, and if you burn it to CD and take it onto another system with good quality audio chain then it will sound ok, but........
Baring in mind that it affects what you hear, you may struggle to get a good mix. Your levels may be out, and I wouldn't even bother to do any fine tuning to the EQ etc. The sound will probably be masked by white noise slightly, so all you can really do on a cheap soundcard is write tracks IMHO

get an m audio mate, means you can record all kindsa diff stuff direct to your pc and get a good quality sound.
That could be a mixer, microphone, keyboard or whatever.
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile2496-main.html this is the one i've got and recommend it highly if your not wanting to spend a fortune

^^^^^ I'll second that!
I had an audiophile as my last card. I've upgraded it to the M-Audio Delta 1010LT which is the same card with extra ins and outs. I'm going to add the audiophile back in though for an extra 2 channels io
M-Audio are seriously good cards for seriously low money

Open up your computer and have a look. If it's the one that came with the computer you can be sure it's not suitable for music production.
Have heard M-Audio are good. I've got an Echo Mia which also does the job nicely.
