quote: The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act was introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL ) to save the Internet radio industry.
Let people know about this! DI.fm will be shutting down its public servers if nothing is done. I know there are thousands of listeners to this station alone - please write in, repost, whatever you can.

Topic unlocked to generate some discussion about it and what else can be done to help. If the other mods deem this should be locked then by all means relock and delete this reply =)

Discussion is always good :)
Anyway this is a big deal for me. If not for net radio I would be in a much different place. Call those congressmen/women and let em 'av it!
Anyone on this site from D.C.?

The new rates are ******** corporate maneuvering and if DI.fm were to shut down public streams cause of that I would be royally pissed as I listen to DI everyday.
Good news though is that the huge public backlash is getting congressmen/women's ears and theyre delaying the start date of the royalty rate increase til June 15. Hopefully by then the new Internet Radio Equality Act will repeal it.
I'm sure if we in the US keep it up we can keep DI and other internet radio broadcasters from having to shut down!

IT's July 15th luckily, which buys a bit more time. Still though. This would essentially shut down the major way electronic dance music is legally broadcasted here in the states as well as many other countries who use stateside services. Losing stations like DI would have a major detrimental impact upon our scene.

Its not just DI.fm this is hurting. As I posted in my other thread on this subject, the majority of large stations are having to close their doors. The back dated royalties for 2006 are meaning some broadcasters having to sell/remortgage their houses, and as the future looks right now, the net radio airwaves would end up being ruled by the big guns ie Sony etc.
There may be relief on the way though in the form of the equality of radio act which takes the rates down to more reasonable rates, and also covers Satellite radio too which so far is going untouched.
Please everyone contact your congressmen and get them to co-sponsor this agreement. This isn't just something that affects the US, it affects the whole world as the majority of net radio stations beam out of the States.
Thanks.

I wouldn't be surprised if on july15th they are close, and july 16th they are owned by one of the corporate companies.

Im worried, but Im still confident that radio will find some way to spring back into action. If you think there is a lot of outcry now, wait until some of the streams shut down. Its going to be absolutly deafening. It might take a while, but I think it'll come back.
