Is there much difference between Vista business and home? I think I'll end up with business but that's not really a problem for games and music production is it? I'm guessing not but just to be sure!

Dual hard drive. Do these work as one unit or would you have like a D and an E drive like you would if you had two hard drives fitted?

Cheers.

Hard drives can be both combined and separate it would depend on how they are set up

There is a list of elements in each different version of vista somewhere ill try and find it for you.

Nice one mate. Only thing it'll really get used for is word processor, games, music production, recording and interweb, I'm guessing this wont be a problem on either but it pays to check aye.

*edit*

and another question heh.

How much difference is there between:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 processor (2.66GHz, 1333MHz, 4MB cache)
Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Quad-Core Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz,1066MHz,8MB cache)

The dual core one should more than meet your needs I would have thought. Especially if your trying to save some money.

The quad would last you longer but would mean more out lay up front and might be overkill for your use.

Im not really up on cpu's though, I find it a little boring, so get info of others when I need to.

OK nice one.

On these does it =:-

Dual core - 5.32Ghz

Quad core - 9.6Ghz

or is that not how it works? It's all got a bit confusing since I last bought a computer.

not really how it works. Think of it more as 2 or 4 separate chips

Most of the time only one core is used. Its only when running mutiple apps or when doing cpu intensive things that you will notice any difference.

ok Quad Core CPU's are basically 4 cores on 1 die. Its like having 4 CPU's in your machine. Dual Core is 2. 99% of stuff at the moment will run fine on a single CPU or a dual Core. BUT in the future more and more multithreading software will become availible. But we are talking years down the line before that really has effect.

Its not so much the amount of cores you have, its the speed each one runs at that really matters. You can get a Core 2 Duo Extreme 2.93Ghz which is basically 2 CPU's running at 2.93 You dont add them up. Combine that with 1033Mhz FSB and you are flying.

I could go on and on and on about them, but to cut it short, get a dual core, you wont need a quad unless you are using huge video encoding suites.

As for Vista, dont be put off by Vista's bad press. Since its release its come on leaps and bounds with better support from other companies and updates for Vista itself. You wont need Vista Ultimate really unless you intend running 64bit vista or a business. I use home premium and its more than enough.

The Digital Rights management , im still bewildered about that, as I quite simply turned mine off. Never had an issue with it. XP is a dying OS now, ppl have to accept that Microsoft will not keep supporting XP as they want everyone to move to vista. For a big percentage of people, it will mean a new PC or some serious upgrades. Remember, DX10 is going to be standard eventually, and thats vista only.

Dont be scared of vista, its actually 100 times better than XP, now that the compatibilty issues are sorted, yes I had hassles with mine at the start, but now its a flying machine. Get Vista Home Premium in either 32 bit or 64 bit and you'll be fine.

No, vista sucks for music production.

Everyone I know is either on a mac or Windows Xp.

Processors is pretty easy atm really. Quad Core or Core2Duo.

Quad - Q6600

Core2Duo - Any between E6600 and E6850

Im pretty sure Quads still only have two actual chips and core2duo only have one (if memory serves me right!)

Id steer clear of vista atm but its worth while making sure all the parts you get are vista compatable cause vista will happen sooner or later.

Unless you get 64 bit of windows which is kinda like vista in the sense that not a lot works on it atm then you cant use more than 3gb of ram (2gb in theory cause 2gb dual channel is better than a 2gb and a 1gb not running dual channel)

btw, you dont add up all the cores to make a total speed like has been said. Kinda complicated in how its spread out..

for single application you could be better off with a faster core2duo than the quadcore cause it wouldnt be using all of its potential. something like fruityloops where you are running a load of vst's i imagine a quad core would come into its own as long as fruity supports it (which i think it does) :)

When you intend to play HD, it will cribble down the audio/video quality or not play at all, unless every single piece of hardware supports DRM. This will force you to use "Microsoft Approved" software and hardware. The DRM, as far as i know, is not fully enforced as of now. The way i see it, you're buying a troijan horse.

The only thing that worries me about Vista is the lack of backwards compatibility with old games, hopefully these will be fixed with game patches for the more popular games though!?!?

I don't watch films/tv on my comp so none of that copyright stuff is a problem for me.

Can't stick with XP forever, gotta move with the times. It seems they are fixing all the bugs and new patches will come out all the time. As has already been said, XP will not continue to be supported forever.

Thanks for clearing all this stuff up everyone :) Sounds like having a duel core is really gonna help with the music production side of things.

has anyone else had the wifi problems with vista? where it switches to local only frequently, and the only way to get it working again is to do a diagnostic :S

From searching the net it seems a common issue but not found any answers to it yet though :(

sorry bit off topic
