I am really into electronic music, mostly rave music to be more specific. Mainly I like happy hardcore, dnb, and trance. But I really want to get into making my own music. It's something I've wanted to do for a while now but have never had the money to look into it until now. I am almost absolutely clueless though. I mean I've seen people spin and I've talked to people that spin and it seems so complex.

I want suggestions from fellow "DJ's" to help me out here. I need to know the basics on what gear I will need to begin mixing, spinning, and recording my stuff. I don't really have too much money, only about 700 bucks. But I need to know what I can get for that price that will work for me. Of course it doesn't have to be professional grade equipment seeing as how it's my first time giving this a shot. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Oh yeah and if I wasn't specific enough about exactly what I want to do, ask me a few questions and I'll inform you more.

my suggestion would be to find someone that spins records in your area and see if you can use their setup. buy your own records of course.

this is a much cheaper way to find out if you want to get into djing or not as this is an expensive hobby.

if you can't I'd suggest looking into a used set of tech 12s, vestax pdxs, or numark ttxs. Or save your money and buy new ones.

If you wind up buying a cheaper turntable, down the line your going to want to upgrade so it's probably best just to go ahead and start with the best =P

I'd recommend nothing less than a direct drive. Spend most of your money on your turntables...better mixers can be bought down the line.

Alright thanks man ^ What do mixers do exactly? and what should I look for in one? Haha I'm sorry but I am clueless. I saw a kit made by some company (which completely escapes me right now). It's that digital vinyl stuff (ya know the ones that hook up to your PC) and like it comes with software, a mixer, two tables, and all the cables for 600 bucks. I wish I knew the name, there was a big site for it.

If you can give me links to good products I'd greatly appreciate that as well. and I really don't know anyone who mixes in my area, a guy a know did formerly but he quit cause he needed money for his car. So he no longer has audio set up, only lights and visual equipment.

mixers essentially take two sound sources and allow you to "mix" them into one

I'd check out guitar center if you have one near you

Alright thanks again. So as for mixers I should just get a subpar one? Like 200 bucks at the most? I'm still looking at tables, used I can get a pretty good deal on the Vestax pdx's that you mentioned. But as for vinyl isn't that a pain to have to get and find? Is it hard to find happy hardcore vinyl?

That's why I liked the idea of those tables that plugged into your computer, but then again that really isn't that cool because vinyl seems more like "the real deal" ya know? Also, do some mixers have output that will allow it to connect to a PC for recording purposes?

I looked into it and I see what a mixer does. and I get the basics of it. So that's good. But as for mixing, how do you add your own sounds to a mix? Cause maybe I am looking at it wrong but with the way I'm getting this is that two vinyls are played at the same time and are synced and mixed as desired, the mixer can fade either in or out, fast or quick, depending on what the user wants.

But that would limit YOU adding your own effects right? I know mixers can adjust bass and treble (I think). But what about sounds? It seems to me like you're limited to what's on the vinyl. I don't really need to add my own sounds at first, I'm just curious on how it's done. I already got mixes playing in my head that I want to create (I have a way of making music in my head and It's just the matter of me getting the equipment to make it come to life) so I'm very excited about all of this.

Well I don't really want to produce music persay. I just want to add a tid bit here and a tid bit there. Like the echo sounds that you hear in music when a song fades out, is that possible with turn tables or would you need something else?

effect wise yes, depending on wat mixer you get (some mixer have diff effects). but if u wanna put things in like vocals n stuff then you will need something that can sample (um turntable can still sample but yeh i just think it would be a lil harder then say buying a cdj that has 4 sample spots). say a stanton c.314 cdj. but srs for ur budget i dont think you will be able to find a system worth $700 that will have decent effects on it. my advice is save up and buy some pioneer cdj 100 or 200 and a decent mixer

Alright thanks for the advice. I saw a mixer than cost 180 on samash.com (http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=2&TempID=3&DepartmentID=7&STRID=131718&CategorySubID=104&CategoryID=104&BrandID=0&CategorySubPriceRangeID=4&pagesize=10&SortMethod=3&Method=3&PriceRangeID=0&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=Department&GroupCode=&categorysubsearch=true) and it claims to have 47 effects on it, which seems like enough for me. I don't need to add my own vocals or anything so no worries about that.
Would that be a good mixer, it isn't too expensive either.

Also, will I need an amp/speakers for this at all or will the headphones do me well? Since I won't be like DJing for parties anytime soon, haha, but just wondering if it'd be good to get myself a speaker now as well.

bahaha iv got that mixer atm and it only has 25 effects, some of the effects are gay and pointless like mute, but others are wicked like shift and laser and i also find the transformer effect is really good on it. it's way good for it's money. i bought mine for $150 on sale lol if i were you i would buy it. it usually cost alot more then that. um yeh you also should buy a decent headphone. but as for speakers...i wouldnt bother. just use the one you have at home. and if ur gonna dj at a party just hire out active speakers (no need for amps in these speakers they already have it built in).

i would recommend staying away from fx mixers if you're just starting mixing. they usually only add to a persons confusion when learning how to mix.

I'd say try a simple battle mixer for starters

Alright thanks everyone for all the advice I'm starting to get some understanding of what I want and need now. and yeah that mixer I posted about is wrong, like the link isn't going where I want it to go. But the mixer I'm trying to link to has 47 effects and has something built into it that is supposed to help sync your tracks. (which I have NO idea what that means) but it sounds important.

I'm looking to spend around 150-180 for a mixer and the rest on tables, I want a mixer with effects on it though. I know it may be a little hard to get at first, cause I can see where that'd happen but once I got a basic mixer down I would want to do and learn more. So I'm going to pick up one with effects, doesn't need to be a lot of effects but just something basic. I'm going to stay away from efx generators until I get a lot more experienced.

As for vinyl... where is a good place to get vinyl, especially happy hardcore vinyl for mixing and whatnot.

I would buy a numark DXM06. Pure quality for a great price. It's got built in effects (2copy, tape echo, echo, flanger, phaser & filter) :)
