So, what separates HH from other types of Techno? Is it the speed?

That depends on if you're following Ishkur's guide or not :P
since spanish people tend(tended) to call Makina for Hardcore 'Techno'.
Definitions will always vary.
but yea, foremost speed and melody separates HHC/UKHC from most other electronic dance music

Techno means a few different things in different countries. If anyone asks me what music I like and I say hardcore and they give me a funny face I say it's a form of dance music.

well to be honest, happy hardcore evolved from rave music when slipmatt released a record with slightly fewer breaks and a very happy sound. it slowly progressed and at its peak (imo) in 96 in which it was characterised by usually stompy distorted (or sometimes high q) kicks, USUALLY offbeat synth stabs, sqaure melodies, piano, happy lyrics and alot of vocals.. sometimes breakbeats, but alot of the breakbeats were pre 96..
Now id say hardcore is its self, it aint really something sped up, sometimes there are influences from hardstyle but id probably compare hardcore to hard trance .. albeit produced at usually 167-170 (sometimes 175) bpm and i personally htink hardcore is usually more simple sounding, more uplifting, happy synth melodies, and to be honest, even the whole structure and elements are hardcore, i wouldnt compare it to another genre just sped up, there are so many elements unique to hardcore..
freeform hardcore however is a whole different thing.

that certainly cleared things up nova.
imo there is no hardcore better than freeform, either the older trancecore or the newer styles. freeform is the only hardcore that comes anywhere near hard trance in terms of awesomeness.
edit: with the possible exception of maybe some gabber. but probably not. and that gabber definately has some freeform styles in it, its not the dark thunder stuff

Lots of USA people always originate everything with the word Techno.
They'd probably not know what the true genre is, Don't take it to heart any usa members on here. But from my experience thats what they brand all dance musics

Just because you are from the US doesn't mean you necessarily call all dance music Techno. That would be dumb if I didn't know the difference don't ya think?
For many ill-informed Americans, Techno is the blanket name for ANYTHING that has a 4/4 kickdrum style beat. ANYTHING. Breakbeats confuse them! :P

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No, people that like hip hop and rock typically don't listen to EDM, plus we just don't have any dance music on the radio...period. Well, in Chicago there's some house on the radio, but nothing upfront.
What they would say is, "I ****ING HATE TECHNO!" or "'Ey man, quit playin' that techno shit!" Which is what I get a lot during gigs. :D

Yep that pretty much sums it up right there for the majority of the American populous.

all my people waiting for my new mix's to come out have just now begun to call it "hardcore"
"when is your new techno cd coming out?"
"are you still working on new trance mix's?"
I usually correct them. and then laugh. nothing i can do about it. except educate. little by little......hahah
