The association goes back to the beginnings of dance music, where the music evolved to make the highs that bit higher and whilst I 100% agree with the points raised above, its a stigma that has stuck.

Firstly, UK/Happy Hardcore is not Techno!
Drugs are associated with raves and rave music because shit loads of people do drugs at raves, FACT. I'd say at least 70-80% of people at raves in the UK do or have done drugs. It's probably not quite such a high figure at the commercial (UK Hardcore, DnB, Trance, etc.) raves as more of your standard drinking up town types start to turn up.
Sure, just as much drug taking goes on at any sort of music event or festival and even up town or in peoples homes, but, most of the older generation and the media don't like and/or don't understand raves so inevitably anything "bad" that goes on at them gets highlighted. Think of the Mods, Hippies, Punks, and people into Rap/Hiphop in the early year’s etc. same thing really. Young generations having fun and experimenting with things while listening to music and acting in a way the previous generation (and therefore the current media) doesn't get on with, it's always been the same for a long time now.
Anyway... Drug use is not the problem. I've taken various bits and bobs over the last 8 years or so and I've got a good job, a mortgage, still got my sanity and I pay my taxes. The problem is people who have to take things overboard and OD/**** up and the people who let themselves get habits. It's the same as drinking, which isn't frowned upon at all! Meh.
Fair play to those people who have never tried and don't want to do drugs, that's your choice and maximum respect to you for it. Please don't look down on those who do use them recreationally though! It's not on.
Quit worrying about what people think about you. If you don't do drugs and people are stupid enough to assume you do because you listen to a certain type of music they're people not worth knowing IMO. At the end of the day I couldn't care less what people say or think about me. I'm proud of who I am and the life I lead. Got a problem with me, what I listen to and what I do? I don't give a shit quite frankly.

I'm based in Norfolk in the United kingdom and frankly on our local broadcast news we usually get reports on illegal raves which take place, a rave happened on sunday in a village near me which didn't get reported which was good news to hear.
Norfolk has the worst free party scene in the UK, it is full of rubbish riggs with bad speakers and bad attitudes. They plaster their riggs and parties all over the internet (forums, facebook, etc.) and even bang on about how parties should "fight the system" and "wear down the police and their funding". What a load of dribble. They're giving free parties a bad name and are going to be responsible for two new laws in the UK making it illegal to transport a rigg to a party and to run a party. Wankers IMO.

the thing the media seem not to report is that people at raves take mdma in all its forms, speed and ket most rock bands/artists are smack or crack heads, yet thats ok, but the rave scene gets dragged througg the dirt!

Thanks for the responses. I agree, with a lot of you. I'm glad we don't have all the idiots in the rave subculture. Every person I know who listens to techno and happy hard core is really smart and intellectual. Everyone I know who listens to screamo/rap is pretty retarded.

Well done, now you're just as bad as the people you're moaning about.

Not retarded, just stuck up attitudes.
