The country is divided into seats, there are like 600 and something. The party that wins the majority of seats wins the election. Labour and Con can both win, Lib Dem would need something very very special. BNP do not run for enough seats to win an election, they only run for about 150-200, therefore they could never win a majority. UKIP run for more as do Green party. Veritas run for around 150 i think. Then there are lots of little parties (ravin looney party) who run for the 'big' seats, like sedgefield where Tony Blair is the local MP etc. Any1 can run to be an MP, you just have to pay £500 and get 10 people from your constituency to nominate you. if you recieve more that 5% of the vote in your constituency, you get your 500 back.
The 4th biggest party in this country is BNP (on number of votes) although they dont have a seat in parliament, they got just over 1 million votes in the last election (which was 4th position, ahead of green and ukip) There are 55 million in england, but obviously not everyone does or is eligible to vote.

Not up to snuff on UK politics but from what I've read in this thread, are there more than two parties in the UK that actually have a chance of winning an election? I don't mean shit like the Green Party over here that doesn't even make 1% of the popular vote.
I wasn't aware there was much of any left wing politics in the US, the Republican and Democrats are both right wing from what I can tell...

Sorry, I'm issueing an apology to Smoogie and Meathead for the shit I started here. I tend to get lary about politics, maybe too much a lot of the time. So I guess I should've thought about what I said before blasting insults at people. My apologies guys (however I stand by Cameron being a centre-right tory, not a leftist)

Yeah that's true. The thing is there are two many different issues to be plainly left or right IMO.
w/e, that's cool that there's more than just two parties running the show in the UK. The democrat vs republican thing is stupid because too many people vote with party blinders on. I guess the same could happen with 3/4/etc parties but it at least gives people more legitimate options.
