Hi I started producing about a week ago and really enjoy it lol, I've got a problem though everytime I try and do the breakdown and build up, it doesn't seem to sound very good. So if anyone could give me any hints/tip's or advice on how to do this i'd really appropriate it lol. Thank's in advance!

DO you know much music theory? Chords etc?

At a guess I'd say it's because it's cheap and/or accessible. Personally I think it's a great program for starting out on.

How long have you been producing for now? I've seen you mention a couple of times that you're learning but never heard anything from you.
TBH mate I think I'm still pretty near the bottom on the large learning curve. ;) Always happy to share anything I have learned though. :)

I've been messing around with tracks since Music came out on the PS1. I've never really had time to learn on the better software so I'm still pretty new to it all. The only problem I have is having ideas for riffs but not being able to make it happen when I want to on the software.

Cool cool. Yeah, that can be a pain! Took me ages before I could actually get the notes down that I had in my head. I didn't have any previous music theory knowledge though which didn't help!
I tend to tap all my stuff out on a keyboard first and get all the notes right. I find that a massive help personally.. Especially when I'm trying to get some chords down.
Do you know about the layers that are used to create the average UKH' riff? Using notes on two octaves, playing them off against each other? You prolly do but if not, this makes a huge difference to the sound.

Could you explain this UKH riff Bulby, I'm not sure that I'm doing that in my tracks. What I usually do for strings or synths is, wherever the first not is, you would miss a white note and layer on the next white note then again, you would miss a white note & layer on the next white note. I was taught this technique from my mate who's a wizard on the guitar but i'm not sure if it's any good for hardcore.

Yeah, that's all to do with basic chord structure mate. Applies to all music! Chords can include black keys as well.
To get that trance riff sound you should use notes on two or more octaves. It creates that energetic pumpy sort of sound. Just as an example, open up a synth and load it with a decent lead sound. Play a note on C6 on each beat of the bar and a note C5 on every off beat for the bar. Now that will sound pretty guff but will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Shuffle them around a bit and add or take away notes.
I can knock up a midi file if this doesn't make sense?
