Is this a good idea for a sound card?

It depends what you should have them for. For djing they seems really uncomfortable.

those Sennheisers aren't good for production
...you want flat frequency response for production...

Audio Technica ATH-M40fs or ATH-M50 are the way to go if you have money.

If you're on a budget, the Sony MDR-V6s are the best bang for your buck. It's one of the most popular mastering headphones ever. Their frequency response is amazingly flat and they are cheap as hell.

You can replace the pads with the Beyer Dynamics velour pads and they are just heavenly.

I'm ordering the ATH-M50s. Same price as the Sennheiser. Thanks.

Anyone have some opinions on that HT omega sound card? Sorry shades but that sound card won't work for me for several reasons.

Care to expand and we can perhaps suggest something better. The M-Audio 2496 gets a massively big thumbs up from me!

OK, my thoughts on the Omega card. Firstly, it has the look of a high end gamers card. Probably pretty similar to the Soundblaster cards. For music production you want to steer clear of the built in effects, and especially the old 3D sound. Music making you want to be using good old fashioned stereo (ie one left, one right) UNLESS you are making music for movies or games.

Second thought - 3.5mm jacks for input and output.... urrrggghhhh again, try and steer clear. They introduce noise.

C-Media chipset - I haven't used a card with a c-media chipset for quite a few years, so they may have improved, but I was never a fan.

No mention of full duplex (ie you can play and record at the same time). It probably is, but its worth checking.

A Signal-to-noise ratio of 115dB. Considering the Audiophile has an SNR of 104dB I suspect that 115dB may be using a different scale, eg dBA - I'm always warey of companies that do that!

Essentially, if you want a gaming card it looks ok, if you want to make music with it then I would look elsewhere.

One of the main confusing things about that card is that is uses RCA audio jacks. Wtf? For one I don't have anything that connects via audio RCA except maybe my N64 and Wii??? And what the heck is the break-out thing for?

You can get cables that will go between rca connections and x connections. At the end of the day all it is is an unbalanced input/output. What inputs does your amplifier / hi-fi / speakers use?

the 24/96 imo is a great card, the audio connectors are standard for audio, it's designed with the producer in mind & will take a midi keyboard or synth if your thinking of stepping up a notch & the connectors on ebay are cheap as hell

These are my speakers:

And these will be my headphones:

I'll also mention that, if there's a card better than the 2496 I could get it if it's not too expensive (price is a max of $150)

And sorry for being newb at this, I can work with a computer but not an audio system :x.

the issue is that you're using computer speakers

of course those are consumer level (NOT pro audio level) so they won't have RCA or balanced 1/4" or XLR connections

If you get studio monitors you'll have 1/4" or XLR inputs, which will be balanced (and therefore reduce line noise). Buying a sound card with balanced outputs is always a wise choice.

Gaming cards and pro audio cards have VERY different applications. Gaming cards speed up sound rendering in games but generally have bad line noise and terrible sound discoloration/coloration.

When you produce you want as FLAT a response as you can accross the whole frequency spectrum, so your mixdown sounds good on as many systems as possible. Computer speakers and a gaming card cannot provide this. You need a pro audio card and studio monitors.

I know, but I would be producing with my headphones on, right? And does a converter exist for them so they would plug into the sound card?

By monitors you mean speakers right?

studio monitor speakers

if your serious you will need these eventually, so like i said about upgrading to a midi keyboard & dain ja said about the monitors, it's better to get a compatible card now so when you can get your equipment up together you'll have no connection problems & have to buy another card
