Is there a future for records? with more and more people downloading instead these days... This is a big change that's not just happening with hardcore but right across the dance scene... There used to be half a dozen dance record shops in my city. Now there is two and possibly one left in the comming months. Sales just are not like the 90's, with most djs opting for cdjays... Some people say vinyl has only a few years left, others say it will always have a place in the scene. Personally I would love to see vinyl stay around along side the newer format. Does anyone out there know how Vinyl sales compare to mp3s with hardcore? Would be interested to know...

Vinyl will always be there as long as:
1) it's seen as a prestigeous and promotional asset
2) there are collectors who buy records
3) the scene is alive and well, attracting new people
Personally I'm over the "vinyl sentiment" - I still buy it, but I get no extra rush from spinning it compared to CDs. Also I have the same respect for good music on vinyl and good music in digital formats - it's all about the tunes. :)
EDIT:
As for the sales, I'm sure label owners who frequent this board can shed some light. Maybe not figures, but percentage? One obvious advantage of selling mp3s - especially off your own site - is that you keep 100% of the profit. A good recent example is Deejaybee's Higher State, a classic one is CLSM. I've got no clue about the actual figures though.

The few record shops in Sweden that sells vinyl never sold Hardcore, so for me, I prefer digital downloads or CDs over Vinyl.

Ok, a really really stupid question from me, but when you buy digital mp3's, do you only burn 1 song onto 1 cd? Or can you put multiple tracks on 1 cd? And how do you mix into the track when you have to flip through the index to the track you want to use?

You can burn about 40 mp3's to cd as a data disc
Personally i burn 10 mp3's per cd, as an Audio cd. I then do a duplicate so i can mix any track out of any other track off that particular cd.

Awesome, becasue I have been checking out serioussounds, and I thought about buying some tracks just for listening pleasure. Would love to have a lot of the Essential Platinum & Quosh tracks!

vinyl is dying.
since new stuff is being released digitally and on vinyl i usually opt for the digital.
i don't have 15$ to spend on a piece of plastic that usually only has 1 song on it that i like.
unless it's a hard to find classic, i don't buy vinyl anymore. i'd rather spend the 3$ or whatever for a perfect quality mp3 that doesn't skip, crackle or pop like a vinyl would after using it for a while.
vinyl is too much money out of my pocket for way too little if you ask me.

Vinyl will never die. I mean if vinyls were going to die out they wouldn't still be getting pressed. There is to many people that appreciate the feel of vinyl over mp3's. I have never bought an mp3 from the internet simply because I can touch and feel a vinyl. It's an object. A bit of matter. but mp3's are just files. to many things go wrong with PC's to have a 1000pound+ collection stored on it. If you somehow lose all your tracks due to a virus or PC problems, you're pretty much f**ked! I'll stick to vinyls thankyou very much:-p

i have all my tunes saved to two different places, so the likelihood of all them getting lost for good is slim. vinyl does have it's place and i do like it, don't get me wrong. it beats making music from a flashing box with a jog wheel any day
i also got away from vinyl because i used to lend them to a friend and they'd be returned... lets just say in a lot worse condition than they were lent in.
i think we can all agree that the price of vinyl is retarded for the amount of tunage you get. all i really want is the data ON the record.
dollar for dollar, (or pound for pound) you get more tunes for your money at the end of a day if you go the mp3 route. that's the only point i'm trying to make here, that i'm a big cheap-ass.

Yeah I have to agree that vinyl is very expensive. But I still love the bass you get off vinyl, always seems to be harder than most mp3 formats. Also it mind sound stupid, but I get kinda excited when I see brightly coloured hardcore releases fresh on the shelves. Used to be a ritual for me and a lot of my mates. You'd go to your local store and try and get all the latest releases on labels like Essential Platinum, World of obsessions, Cencore, Uk Dance, Impact, Next Generation, Slammin Vinyl, Infinity, Red Rocket, Dwarf, Evolution, Screw Driver, Pengo, Mokum etc... You'd always bump into people you'd met at parties and have a chat. It's kinda all become a lot more personal in how you by your music now and less social.

I disagree. Vinyl will die eventually, I think that is pretty much a given. Vinyl sales are still falling and there will come a time pretty soon when none of the small labels can afford to press, and then it will only be the larger labels that can, although their profit will still be being hit. Factor into that the fact that the pressing plants will have suffered a drop in business, then they can either operate at a lower profit, bump up their prices (and so the spiral continues) or simply close their doors.
As regards losing your collection, that is why it is important to backup your mp3 collection. Mine is stored on an external hard drive, also on my internal drive and further on online storage. I am covered if my hard drive is stolen, I get a virus or if my home burns down. I am now more worried about my records being stolen or melting in a fire than I am my digital files.
Oh, and check out stuff like Final Scratch - all the benefits of digital but you control it with an actual record and turntables. Best of both worlds!

except from about 3-4 people produce it. Yea Hardcore (or rather UK), has never gone well in Sweden. from time to time some older (happy) Scooter tracks are still played :)

The last time I checked. YOU CANNOT TOUCH SOUND (unless it's vibrations on solid material). Other than that, why should we care on what format music is stored on? About 10 years ago most people barely used credit cards, and nowadays credit cards are the prefered way of paying stuff (atleast in Sweden). Instead of having to have a large lump of money in your pocket, you just pull up a shiny small card and drag it in a device and you have paided (hopefully :P).

i had this talk with dj smurf from ggm last night aw we both agree that the more places we play the less we see vinyl being used! last night the only dj on the whole night that used them was smurf! and its tru less and less people are useing decks and switching to cdj. to be honest i will always use vinyl till they stop pressing it up. which will happen one day. the record scene cant compeat with the digital market anymore!
