well if the world does get sucked into a black hole, it'l be those closest to it that go out first. you people over there might not have as long to live as you think! meanwhile il be enjoying the next four years knowing europe and america have pissed off into some hole.
Btw, what experiment are you all talking about? ive heard nothing about it. probably cause im on the other side of the world =P

Hey people. can someone just outline the ACTUAL purpose for this thing?
What is it supposed to be able to do if it works properly? I followed the link from google to the wikipedia and couldn't make arse or end of it! Yay, particles will get speeded up three of four known forces are stronger than the fourth of gravity blah blah blah, DO NOT CARE, JUST TELL ME WHAT THE BLOODY POINT IN THE MACHINE IS!! ARGH, STUPID WIKIPOODIA.
Anyway, yes, don't worry about any black holes appearing or anything anyway, NASA have already confirmed on CNN that should particles start becoming too densely compacted in a way that would signify the start of a black hole, they have a plan to destroy it....

oooooo.....Epic.

Jester - It's for science type stuff mate. What are you, an idiot?
For me, the most interesting thing it may tell us is whether or not there is more dimensions than we have currently proven.

Hey hey hey, what're you dragging them into this for?! I think they're annoying too but it's a bit much trying to blame the end of the universe on them!!

yea do kind of have a tendency to go off on one when i get going.
Anyway back on topic, i heard a little bit of a report about this on the radio about an hour ago sayin pretty much what's been said here about recreating the big bang. That is amazing! Scary to think that if this all goes through correctly, tell me if i'm wrong but that would disprove creationism indefinitely! Mad to think how the people of the world would react to that!
Well exciting invention this, really incredible stuff. Mad to think how far our race has advanced in technologies such as this yet we still can't feed all the people on earth and stop the destruction of our atmosphere. How ironic.

The purpose of LHC is to, hopefully, release and observe particles that have been predicted by theoretical models, but so far we've lacked sufficiently powerful accelerators to do so. Some of the exciting concepts that might be proven (or disproven) as a result:
- Higgs particle (a theoretical particle that is responsible for actually giving matter its MASS; think about it, even the fact that something's got mass has to come from somewhere, and we might be able to confirm that there is indeed a Higgs field that does just that)
- supersymmetry (it states that every known particle should have its symmetrical partner, effectively doubling the whole zoo)
- the whole antimatter and dark matter issue (hopefully the LHC will collide ordinary matter with such force that some fractions of "weird" matter appear)
And what's the major point? Well, pushing knowledge and technology forward! How about being able to control antimatter and basically erase cancer tumours from patient's body? How about harnessing matter annihilation, which is potentially an even more potent energy source than nuclear reactions? And how about actually knowing that wee bit more about how all this stuff around us works (and why)?
As for the "defeating creationism" argument, I don't think so. Fundamentalists are already extremely ignorant (Bible says so, it must be true). Moderates generally don't see a problem with science explaining more and more things - you can still have god as the "first cause" or "divine spirit".

Some good cuts from a news article;
"Dr Rossler, who has been the experiment's foremost critic, and other signatories to the appeal said the LHC's potential to create life-sucking black holes violated the right to life under the European Convention of Human Rights.
The court rejected Dr Rossler's appeal, but he still believes that a mini black hole could "eat the planet from the inside" within four years of forming. "
4 years! So not tomorrow according to him...
"Team member Professor Brian Cox — once the keyboardist with pop group D:Ream — said the experiment posed no danger to the public.
"Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat," he told the Telegraph."
Well, if D:Ream say it's true...
oh man, we got nothing to worry about.... if D:Ream is a part of it, things can only get better right???
