I hate to ask a noobish question but how do I make hardcore kicks? And I mean good ones. I already have some TR909 samples. I've tried using several effects (the default one, CamelPhat) but I'm only getting insanely hard gabber kicks, not the ones "in the middle."
What FX plugins would you recommend I use?
I was aiming for the kicks like you hear in these songs:
Double Dutch - Droptop
Double Dutch - Delirious
Rapido - Insomniak
Sharkey & Trixxy - Therapy
Twist & Friendly - Twisted but Friendly
I know I've asked this before, but the only answers I would get were pretty uninformative ("do X, do Z to A, there you go" "oh, well that's just a Y") and/or confusing. I could never reproduce the sound. I also don't want to do sampling because the sound quality is usually lower, or there's other sounds in the way.
Cheers m8s.

i don't believe that for a minute !!!!
have you tried putting a microphone in your mouth & headbutting a wall?
try that 3 times before pressing record.

Alright, before you start insulting me like that this is the best advice I've received:
quote: use equalizers and distortion on a simple tr-909 kick sample
What kind of equalizer? How should I adjust it? What kinds of distortion? How should I tweak it? What's a recommended distortion VST?

Hardcore kicks, so hard to beat
Every time they walk down the street
Sorry, couldn't resist that!
Most people assume you want to make your own music, so when you slap a distortion (or I prefer overdrive personally as its warmer) or some EQ on a sound you tweak it to your own preference, not somebody elses - otherwise you might as well pay somebody else to engineer your track for you.
Also, try experimenting! You will learn alot more about how things work than me coming along and telling you to boost your EQ by 2dB at 104Hz with a fairly wide Q. Take a kick drum sound that you quite like and a distortion and play with the settings until you find something you like. Then do the same thing with just an EQ. Then combine the 2 and tweak it until you are happy with it.
One thing I would suggest is add a compressor!
As for plugins I can't reccomend any as I use Reason these days. I used to like the Waves suite but there may be better out there these days.
And as for sampling - try it! It doesn't matter if there are other sounds there, it all adds to the character. At the end of the day you will have sounds over the top as well so any extra hat over the top will simply get drowned under yours. The "sound quality" as you refer to it is good enough, unless you are looking for a nice clean, generic hardcore sound in which case check out:

i was only messing around duder, if i wanted to insult you you'd know about it lol
anyways heres one to try:
open 2 instances of the 'same kick' rename kick1 kick2 if you like...
on kick 1 layer a hat or quiet clap/snare something with a lot of top end to add a bit of snap, then run it through a high pass filter
on kick 2 run it through overdrive or add distortion whatever floats your boat & run it through a low pass filter
layer both kicks together.
you'll need to run both through seperate eq's & adjust to your tastes with reverb etc...
at the end of the day only you know what you want it to sound like
try it
