I went to the Bounce Heaven awards at 53 degrees in Preston this weekend (i know, I know, bounce is the devil to most of you lol), I went for the hardcore arena.
The flyer looked promising....Hixxy, Ham, Gammer, Marc Smith, Krafty DJz, Airtight, Benson and a live P.A from Lou Lou.....I felt like I was in for a good night!!!!
My friend was really looking forward to Hixxy (they arent into hardcore as much as me) and I couldnt wait for Gammer, Marc Smith and Lou Lou.
So.....I told my friend Id be surprised if Hixxy turned up due to his reputation of.....well....not turning up. So what happened....
Hixxy, Gammer and Marc Smith didnt turn up!!!!!!!! Not one of them!!!! I mean seriously, what does that say about hardcore when half the DJs dont turn up? People are worried that hardcore is dieing yet the people who are able to save it.....cant be bothered. £12 a ticket and they dont even come.
When I saw the schedule in the club, Joey Riot had been drafted in to play 3am till 4 and MC Gav B was under the impression that he would be on with Joey Riot....but.... Joey didnt turn up. I guess you cant blame him for that as he wasnt supposed to be there anyway, but why say that he is a replacement and then not turn up? Not only did the headliners not turn up, but neither did their replacement! The amount of DJs out there that would have loved to play this club but they dont get the chance because 'big names' are booked instead who dont turn up. So here is how the night panned out.......
Lou Lou did 10.45 till 11 and was fantastic! 'Makin me wanna dance' was the highlight of my night, a really good P.A.
Ham did 11-12 and was very good also and unfortunately for me was the only DJ to come out of this night with any credit, he played a good varied set and had me stomping for the full hour!
Due to all the no shows Ajay and Rinsky (Krafty DJz) played 12-2......OMG! Next time I see these guys on a flyer i will just avoid it, i couldnt wait for the 2 hours to end! Its like they have been adopted by Raverbaby or AATW or something! If you wanna hear their set, just listen to the new HTID cd and CXH...also....I dont know what is wrong with Rinsky but he pulls some funny faces (lol random). Out of 2 hours they maybe played 3/4 good tracks, they mixed quite well, although one or two mixes were off.
So 2 o clock came and that was Hixxy's slot, at least thats what the schedule in the club said, but he decided not to come (must have been busy counting up all the money he has made in the first week of CXH5) To be honest I was glad he wasnt there, I couldnt have handled a 3rd hour of raverbaby after the last 2 fellas.
So.....Airtight played b2b with.....Ajay. Oh great....a 3rd hour of Ajay, but he does organise the event so he may aswell plug himself as much as he can. Credit to him for stepping in and trying to hold the night together, hes not a bad DJ and hes a pretty good MC, its Rinsky that lets him down and this was evident because 2-3, Airtight b2b Ajay was much better than the 2 hours before it. The tunes were better, it was more energetic and the mixing was better and I didnt have to watch Rinsky smile and pull silly faces for another hour.
Joey Riot wasnt there so the hardcore arena shut at 3 instead of 4 and i went downstairs and danced to some bounce.
As for the MCs....Gav B, Gazy J, Finchy, Ajay, Master C and Friction all did a very good job, full credit to them all!!!!
So what do you think? wouldnt you be gutted? What do you think it says about hardcores 'big names'? Is it their fault that people think hardcore is in crisis? I dont mind a DJ not turning up if there is an excuse, but for 4 DJs not to turn up???? Id be interested to hear what the DJs/MCs who did bother to turn up think about no shows!

Maybe there was a reason to why they didn't turn up?

I'm not familiar with the night but it could be that it's a bit shady. A lot of dodgy promoters/events out there. Artists may not have actually been booked or may have not been given their money when they turned up?
Not saying that this is what happened but it does happen a lot with these smaller nights that promise a lot of big names.

It may well be the promoters and or they may well have had excuses but its not like a little crappy night. All the DJs in the bounce room turned up, there were 1250+ people there, the night is not a one off its been going on for well over a year, its a massive venue (bit hard to miss), the hardcore room was streamed all night on kraftyradio.com who also belived hixxy and gammer to be playing (they posted in the website section on here) and Preston isnt that hard to find, you just drive up the M61 until the motorway runs out and you are in Preston.
Not being able to find the place isnt a good excuse and it cant be marc smith's (ive seen him play there before)
It may well be the promoters or arguements over money but from a fans point of view, when 4 DJs dont turn up, its embarressing for the event and for the scene. You are hardly going to encourage more people to listen to hardcore if the DJs dont turn up are u.

Lethal theory play there on a regular basis afaik. Iv never been, i goto uni in preston and the club is across the road from the building im in.
How is it for a night out? Where do you sleep? do u crash at a m8s place or do u live close.
Iv held off going because getting back home will be a pain, have 2 wait till like 6 for the trains to start running and a 2hour wait is not good if your steaming :D

Considering that's 4 DJs from different camps that didn't show up, I think it's safe to assume it was the promoter's fault. Chances are the promoter didn't pay the deposit or something along those lines.
I highly doubt the headliners were out partying instead of getting paid to play these gigs.

you are probably right, but from a fans point of view it isnt ideal. Alot of people will have left that club with a lower opinion of the no shows than when they went in, and if it is the promoters fault then thats not right. I guess the problem is that you never actually find out what the problem is. A promoter will not come out and say 'we are shit its our fault' and a DJ wouldnt come out and say 'that promoter is crap' cause they will risk losing future bookings.
My point is that it disappoints alot of people when an event doesnt go anywhere near to plan.....alot of people will have felt let down no matter whose fault it was.
Physx - 53 degrees is a good venue yeah, it has alot of different events, bands play there etc etc I live in bolton so just get a taxi there n back.

The Hardcore room at Bounce Heaven is hosted by Vibealite, and I've always considered them to be one of the most reputable promotors in Hardcore... there have been 1 or 2 occasions when DJ's haven't turned up for their sets there in the past but they always brought in quality replacements for them (at least they did when I used to attend their events in Bradford and Leeds)
Sorry it spoiled your night, get in touch with Vibealite and find out what the story is... you never know they might offer you some free tickets for the next one or something if you tell them what you've just told us... 1 no show is understandable but 3 is taking the piss a bit!

Do the producers set up contracts over there for DJs? because they do here, well kind of. that way if the DJ misses out, promoters can get their deposit of full payment back.
but this really does look like the promoters goofed up. and what sux is that some fans don't know that and they'll blame the whole incident on the DJs, giving them a bad rep. bad promoting can also kill the scene if it gets out of hand

Why do I get the feeling that they were never coming! Same happened to me in a club in Glasgow. Hixxy plastered all over the flyer but when we got to the place, it was really obvious that he wasn't going to travel from his nice big HTID events to come to this s**thole of a club!
These dodgy promoters should be fined/charged whatever. Its clearly false advertisment & it's 100% intentional! It seriously pisses me off & I hear ya loud & clear Dreem!
Too be quite honest, if the ravers don't get what they pay for then they should all turn & leave the event & never go back to one. That would soon show the promoters whats what
