Which should be classed as second city for England? (not the whole of the UK) I belive that in size, Brum is the second biggest to London. Manchester is the sixth biggest city but if we were to judge the 'Greater Manchester Urban Area' than it is the third biggest Urban area in England. The second biggest Urban area is West Midlands which includes both Birmingham & Wolverhampton & other places on the edge. The Greater Manchester Urban area includes The City of Manchester, Salford & most other parts of the 'Greater Manchester Metropolitan County' of which there are ten boroughs (two being cities: Manchester & Salford)

The West Midlands Metropolitan Councy is also made up of Coventry but that is seperate from the Urban area. It is hard to judge the size of a city as often people live outside of it as is the case in London. The City of London is only one square mile & alot of people live in Outer London Boroughs. There is a Greater London Urban Area which is bigger than the administrative area of Greater London (which is made up of London Boroughs)

Anyway im off to Manchester next year & would like to come across another city in the UK like London & only found Glasgow so far (although Liverpool came close). I belive that Man should be second city for a number of reasons. Also my ex boss came from Birmingham & I have noticed that Brum dosn't even have a main river through it! I think every city should have a river as it gives a sense of life for people to enjoy! London has the Thames, Glasgow the Clyde, Bristol the Avon, Liverpool, the Mersey, Newcastle the Tyne & Man has the Irwell!

Manchester has alot of victorian architecture & im a big fan of victorian buildings & I know Brum has a few but there is also alot of grim '60s blocks. This gives a sense of dispair!

Also I like the Manchester accents! Don't watch Corrie (but it is funny) but after working with a Brummie who moaned at me all the time I can't can't stand hearing anymore! (No offence to good Brummies though) The Blackout Crew video made me laugh! (put a Donk in it )

Also Man had a rave scene back in the '80s & '90s! I enjoy a HMS Gabber mix from Hardcore Heaven in 1996 & I know The Hacienda was big back in the day & must have been the first mega club in the UK (outside of London I guess)

Also Man has a wheel & Metro system & not forgetting two main stations; Piccadilly & Victorian (the the remains of Liverpool Road, the world's oldest surviving station building even though not longer used for trains)

Im not into football but Manchester has big teams. My ex boss supported Birmingham & was a holligan part of the Zulus back in the '70s (even has scares to proudly show for it) I pissed him off when I told him I don't even know Brum had a team!

So what do you think should be England's Second City? Manchester or Birmingham?

It can't be named the second city because it has good Drum & Bass producers...

Manchester for sure!

Both cities however have good arguments for them though, based on their cultural and industrial past. I just find Manchester to be a much more well rounded city.

I am bias though!

You can all vote, but officially, Birmingham is England's second city. Plus, I vote Brum!
