In answer to your question, I think happy hardcore is a world away from the newer style of hardcore being released today. It's not called "happy" because a lot of it isn't happy and childlike as it used to be. For a song to sound happy, it needs to focus on major chords in the chord structure. Songs like Hixxy & Sharkey's "Toytown", Dune's "Hand In Hand" and DJ Ham/Demo/Justin Time's "Here I Am" do just this. In comparison, Styles & Breeze's "Heartbeatz", Brisk & Ham's "Angel Eyes" and Darren Styles' "Save Me" (I chose popular examples in both cases to prove the point better) are all built on a primarily minor framework of chords. Of course, not all old and new tracks have these characteristics, but on a purely musical basis this would be a fair hypothesis to make, I think. As for nu-style gabber, sure it's a lot more "angry" and noisy compared to your standard, modern-day UK hardcore, but that doesn't mean that new hardcore is all infantile toy-town nonsense listened to only by kids and kiddyfiddlers!

I've got that CD too, and whilst the first 3 CDs are upfront hardcore mixed/compiled by Sy & Unknown, CDs 4-6 are in fact predominantly happy hardcore. Of course, record companies will often extend/overgeneralise the truth to make you buy stuff.
