At least I got some tips before it got derailed! 
Didn't get chance to try any last night but I think that the simple way will do for me. The quality may not be perfect but at least it avoids the "digging out a classic tape for a listen, chewing it, and losing it forever" scenario. So long as I can get some of the oldest ones, and by that I mean about 18 years old, to play right for one last time I'll have them backed up somewhere.
