Right so ive got about £400 quid to spend (maybe £500 at a push), looking for a good pair of monitors for production. Been looking about at other peoples set ups etc but still not sure. Any help would be appreciated and if you use em yourself please tell me, id like a good solid recommendation before parting with that much bloody money lol. Already got a decent amp so that's not a problem.
Also would i have to buy a new/better Soundcard? Currently using the SigmaTel High Definition thingymabob that came with the comp.
Cheers.

I've got some Rokit 6's and they do the trick for me. 1 thing I would like though is a bit more bass response though... Seem a little week on this front and it can be hard to get my kick and bass right without checking it on another system.
Should really make an effort to go out to a store where you can listen to a few. Will be worth the time and travel expenses.

You can do better than rokits with that price range. Especially better than a 5 inch woofer.
Event TR8's (my monitors)or Yamaha HS80M's would be my recommendations. Both 8 inch woofers with amazing clarity. Although theres also the rokit 8's which are alright, but they're on sale over here because they over-manufactured. Sure enough sign they're not that great. I'd go with the yammies or the events.
But yes, you will need an external audio interface unless your onboard soundcard has unbalanced (RCA) or balanced (XLR) outputs? I doubt they do.
M-audio make some decent external audio interfaces, although you could probably do a bit better. I have a presonus inspire - it's decent and cheap, quality is very good, only downside is that it has unbalanced (RCA) outs which results in some high pitch hum through the monitors which dissipates once a signal is passing through them. It's also firewire which is a plus (faster). It'll set you back about 100 pounds/AUS$250/US$200
A step up from that is a presonus firebox which runs at about 200 pounds (i think?) and has balanced outs. Also firewire.
So which means you may have to take a step down in price range from the Events and the yammies, which means rokit 6's might be a good idea.
But NEVER, EVER buy monitors without listening to them first. They're subjective. make sure you listen to the rokit 6's and then listen to the yammies and the events. If you can justify the extra cash, then save.
*EDIT* what kind of amp do you have? Unless it's specifically designed for an extremely flat response, i'd avoid using it for music production - also don't use a sub for production either.
It's probably more worth your time to get active monitors (they have amps build into each speaker) which are the ones i described in the above post.

Cheers mate, really helpful. Will definitely look into it, see if there's any shops that sell them locally.
The amp is just a regular hi-fi amp knew that would need upgrading aswell. Christ i need more moneys lol. May just go for active moniters like you said.

Also, just so you know, rokit 8's in the grand scheme of monitors are cheap.

Yeah, the Rokit series is very affordable. Good bang for the buck.
It's funny though, my friend opened one of our Rokit8s and one of our Truths and compared components and the Truth actually have a higher quality amp in them. But the Rokit8s definitely sound better/clearer and give much better mixdowns as long as you don't crank them too much (they have a cheap amp-on-chip).
