Indeed it was the 300th anniversary of the union :)
300 hundrands years & look how we cahnged the world & yet no one wanted to celebrate! The 'new' countires like America & Australia love they national days so why not the UK? It St Geroge's isn't even a public holiday & St Andrew's has only just become one? Whats the day in Wales? Anyone know if they have one?
St Davids day is the Welsh one. I don't know if they have a holiday for it though.
Well...It's an optional holiday, most people won't get it, as their employers have the final say. A stupid idea really. You either do or don't with this kind of thing.
We should have a Union day. The look on Salmond's face at such a thing would be utterly priceless . I think the only problem with such a thing is that some people are too quick to be apologetic for the way in which Britain changed the world, mostly in regard to the slave trade and the empire. I don't see the problem with it myself. Ok, in this day and age such a thing would be unacceptable, but this was a long time ago. This was the done thing at the time. Still though, in this day and age, the sun never sets on the British Empire.

^^^ I thought the slaves where American & that a slave was a free man once he set foot on British ground? We had the industrial revolution, the railways, won two world wars (with the help of others) and founded the rave scene!

A lot of Brits got very rich out of the slade trade. Perhaps slaves in Britain aren't as well known as the slaves in America, but it was mainly the British who captured the slaves, took them to America and sold them.
Some people feel deeply ashamed of this, although I have no problem with it. It's in the past, no point crying over spilt milk.

That's actually a myth. Most slaves were actually bought from the elders of their tribes/communities etc. A lot easier to blame the evil white man and get compo though...
