when i used to live back on the isles of scilly (where i grew up) we caught the tail end of all the major hurricanes, and got it the worst, just because of our location! :D

its all connected to fault lines and plate movement. we're not near a plate, really.. though we have low level shakes now and again, but it's rare it gets to the point we can feel it. the worst weve had was a mag. 6 i believe in colchester in the 1700's..
triq is right. california is the most unsafe and naturally hazardous area to live in due to the san andreas fault line running along the rockoes and connecting to the sierra mountain region. hence the mr st helens and the ever looming yellowstone and the earthquakes of the 80's and 94. california is due a major quake very soon.

We've had ONE by me when I lived in Detroit in Lansing.
We have no faults, cracks, or any kind of opening in the earths crust by us. So we don't get any. The one time we did was by freak accident.

yeah but japan are smart enough to build everything out of rubber-metal lol
san fransisco had the great idea to build a multi-story/tier solid concrete motorway.. i cant remember what it was called, circuss or something. anyway, a mile stretch collapsed in an 80's quake and killed 64.. then, they rebuild it and it breaks again in 1994!
why have one!
