its all connected to fault lines and plate movement. we're not near a plate, really.. though we have low level shakes now and again, but it's rare it gets to the point we can feel it. the worst weve had was a mag. 6 i believe in colchester in the 1700's..

triq is right. california is the most unsafe and naturally hazardous area to live in due to the san andreas fault line running along the rockoes and connecting to the sierra mountain region. hence the mr st helens and the ever looming yellowstone and the earthquakes of the 80's and 94. california is due a major quake very soon.

if my memory serves me correctly, don't the area of plates move? i know that is what happens with volcanic eruptions, especially island volcanoes. the plate tectonics move towards a direction. Hawaii is a perfect example of the movement. the biggest islands are the youngest, while the smaller extinct volcanic islands are the oldest. i think plate movement is the same with earthquakes

and it has been predicted that Cali will have a massive earthquake, breaking totally apart some areas of the states and making them into islands. but i don't know how accurate that is as i saw it on a show bout unnatural phenomenons. not sure if there is any scientific proof to back that up
