Me & a couple of friends have been chatting about studio's lately & was wondering exactly what is needed to build a basic studio. One for making choons, recording vocals etc etc.

@ Triquatra
that made my day xD
well wouldnt you need a mic, a mixer, some type of midi keyboard, an interface (so the mic and stuff works on the computer(, a music program, a good-ish stable computer, and your self
wouldnt that make a simple setup?
i may be wrong

add to that a pair of monitors.

A Midi keyboard isnt really a neccessity, nor is a mixer.
As far as i know all you'd need is; a computer, a DAW, some good studio monitors would be ideal, a microphone & interface. The latter two only if you want to record vocals, if so it would be ideal to have a soundproofed space i think?
Also some creativity, plenty of spare time and passion and some form of stress relief. Punchbag in the studio would be good.

These days you can get away with just software! I wouldn't advise it personally but it's pretty much what most Hardcore producers are doing these days (no i'm not suggesting it's a good thing).

Software + Any sort of listening device, be it monitoring speakers or headphones + fresh ideas + Motivation and willingness to learn.
The last one is the most important.

all you really NEED is a working decent computer (lets assume it has working speakers) and a program.
however. a good system is almost essential, or you will play tunes at a party and it will not sound how you meant it to on proper club speakers. you need to be able to hear all the levels properly.
as well a keyboard is not a nessesity but its ****ING annoying to come up with melodies and change them without one.(endless clicking)
so i would say for simple studio: decent computer+program and a decent system + a keyboard if you still have some money left off.
oh and a mic for vocals(if you need it)

Agreed. Even low-end monitors, positioned properly, help immensely.
