With a well mixed and mastered track you will have gotten rid of as many nasty peaks as possible. If you have a giant peak/giant peaks anywhere on the frequency range this will bring up the volume of the mix by large amounts meaning the rest of the track will sound very quiet. The more you can flatten these peaks, the more you can bring up all the other sounds in the mix.

Now I'm sure you already know all this but... Take your track with its massive peaks and play it on a sound system and you will suffer the same problem. Sure, you can turn the gain up, but you can only turn it up so much. To get the perceived loudness of your track up to that of a well mixed/mastered track you will likely blow the speakers producing the frequency peaks in your track. Either that or the system will have some form of limiter on it that stops you from getting to that point. It can also be bad for peoples hearing.

As well as all this you want to get every part of the track really loud for maximum impact right the way through. You don't want a nice loud intro tailing off into a quiet breakdown as this will really lose everyone on the dancefloor. Everything needs to be loud, loud, loud!

To get the loudest mix possible you will obviously take a hit on dynamic range so it doesn’t always make for great home listening. But in a club environment, it is definitely what you want.

Hope this clears it up a little? I’m not the best person to be explaining this but I believe what I’ve said is correct (maybe badly explained though ;)).

I prefer the CLSM interview, much more in-depth. This one is worth the watch though.

Tbh im not that clued up about it, i do understand about dynamics though, which is why i wasnt keen on the idea of the whole compress it to **** thing. What ive learned from my very little experience is that when a track is limited too harshly everything mashes together, and not in a good way. I dont really go to raves so loudness isnt really a big deal for me, id prefer a track to sound nice than loud and squashed, i dont really understand enough about this stuff to go on about it so ill stop now :) Think i was just trying to pick fault cos its Breeze and Styles

Cheers mate, cleared it up a little for me.

Anyone back to the production vids....

Mistabishi's. Very, very helpful i urge anyone to check it out!

Haha, I like the little end tidbit.

Just remember that this is not the final mixdown for CD's. It's just to boost the sound level in clubs, like they said.

Google / youtube

Ive never come accross the CLSM vid though.

Alternatively go here....

http://www.futuremusic.co.uk/

I believe the CLSM video was in a copy of Computer Music, you can look through the back catalogue and buy the issue you want i think.

They do a lot of filming so they skip a lot of stuff but i think it would be unbearable if it was the original 4 hours long! I was surprised Breeze and Styles hadnt used sidechaining on a main riff until this track/ video was made in 2008 ...
(hhhhmmm Into The Sound / Causing A Heart Attack (12") G-Core GCORE003 UK 2003)
But what is a good reminder on theirs is the perfection of things, going back maybe 5 times to a mixdown to get it bang on. Attention to detail to get a quality sound.

Argh why are some of Computer Music Magazine's tutorials so bloody short? I get Future Music and i get like an hour of watching Funkagenda making a tune, which i really am not that desperate to watch, yet CLSM, who i would really like to see working in the studio, i get 10 minutes of! Bastards!

Ive got the CM Masterclass collection with a load of other producers on it. I think for this disc they just used highlights, the Breeze and Styles one is about the same amount of time yet the proper version is 40mins i think.

EDIT

They have been edited.

Didnt notice that bit, bastards lol

Ah that's a bugger man. Someone posted a link to the full thing on HP a while back. Might be worth a quick scan.
