there are many websites to sell mp3 downloads

what do you think is better? sell only in one of these places, or sell in many? and why?

Many, obviously.

Not everyone goes to the exact same MP3 store. So selling in multiple stores increases sales overall in the big picture.

More exposure on multiple sites = more sales across the whole.

You don't have to shell out to as many sites for hosting you're tracks, but obviously you're tracks won't reach as wide an audience.

@ Naturatech: If you're after selling some of your work talk to Redwingz, he'll be able to enlighten you mate.

Sites don't charge you to host your tracks, so more websites is better than fewer, some people have accounts on X websites but not on Y and cant be bothered to re sign up on the other website...

Then again some websites take more % of money than others, but i think overall selling on as many as you can is the best strategy.

More important than any of that, is to make sure you are selling decent tracks! :D

Lol if only that was moderated! Literally anyone can sell any music these days, which is generally good apart from the fact that people will try to sell anything, and do.

yes I agree with this and the "more exposure" argument

but what makes me wonder is the fact that the sites only transfer you the money when you reach a certain number of downloads... so this make me think that selling in a single site will increase the number of downloads, and therefore increase the rate of transactions from the site... instead of having little downloads in many sites...

does this make any sense at all?

@ whispering: count with it! ;)

imo there is no point selling your music...unless it is top notch and you are fairly well known..i reckon youd have to build up a fairly big reputation before you start selling a decent amount of songs..if nobody has ever heard of you or your tracks then you arent gonna sell any in the first place so it doesnt really matter how many sites you are on..you need to promote your stuff big time

i think i just had a small rant that didnt really have anything to do with this topic lol

I just put my music into CD form and sell it at school (or work). Then again, I assume this isn't the answer you were looking for =S

Whatever you do, make sure you uphold this. There's far too many under-produced, shit tunes out there as is.

they dont charge you to host them...they just take lik 25% for every track sold..differs from site to site though

Ooooo two people mentioned me in this topic :D arent I popular :)

Anyway....Im of the opinion that more download sites is better, especially if you are starting out, because like Cialin said, you need to have a big reputation to sell an amount of units that will make you any money worth collecting, more websites reach out to more people and help to build your name a bit.

NSR sells on Juno, trackitdown, IMO and Beatsdigital.
The sites dont require you to sell a certain number of units before you collect, you must earn a certain amount of royalites though. IMO require you to generate £30 whilst the other 3 require £50.

Cialin mentioned a 25% cut, which is a little off, the minimum cut i have seen a site take is 33%. Trackitdown pays a set royalty of 50p to yourself or label per unit. 99p goes to them and covering any costs etc. So you need to sell 100 units on TID before you can generate an invoice. Beats digital pay around the same, maybe 10p higher or so. Juno's royalty system is just bonkers and i dont even get it, but expect a low amount from there.
Imo pays the best royalty, it pays £1 for a track sold for £1.49 (double what TID will pay). 30 units at £1.49 and you can generate an invoice.

This sounds good and is the reason IMO is so popular, but they now have a filter of major labels and all labels. When you click on hardcore it only shows you major labels. So unless someone clicks to view everything, which not many people will as you filter in all the imo shite, then you aint even going to get seen. NSR has just this week been moved to major labels and has already seen a big improvement on IMO sales.

Juno is good as it appeals worldwide, I got my NSR invoice from them today and it tells you the country of the person who bought the track.....we sold tracks in USA, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary and Australia as well as Britain, so thats quite cool.

If you make a track and shove it on IMO and beatsdigital today (juno and TID take longer as they mail you a HOA which you have to sign and return before they accept you) then you would do well to sell 10 copies in your first 2 weeks of sales as you are just starting. After 2 weeks of release sales slow up heavily.

Alot of people think its simple and that you can make easy and good money but its not the case at all. Its hard to promote and I know a few people that have started up labels and been shocked that their tracks have sold badly and then they tell me they are only on imo, dont have a website and hardly promote......of course you will only sell 5 copies!!

A label owner once said to me 'My mp3s arent selling well, over at NSR are you selling around 70-80 units per track on average?'
Do I have Gammer on my label? No.
Thats how clueless people can be about digi sales.

But if you wanna do it then follow Atomsk and Oli G's advice as its pretty good. Aim for double figures with each track and hope that each track sells more than the last. Send your tracks off to 'big' name DJs for free and why not release a freebie too to help draw attention to yourself. Put a freebie on 4shared as it even has a download counter.

If you are starting a label you NEED a website or you will not be taken seriously, or at the very least a myspace.

Hope this helps
