alot of the engineers in hardcore seem to have been coders/programmers in the past so there's definitely indication that it takes some intellect

they're both about problem solving.

It's pure creativity, thats all that matters (although current Hardcore is anything but creative, hence it sounds so bad).

good question. i think you have to be intellegent to be able to work the software properly in order to make a proper track, and you also have to be intelligent in music sense to be able to make origonal music in any genre. ie. proper bar counting, major/minor chordes, eb and flow, ect...so ya. i was kinda typing that answer as i thought it and i was gonna say both but now i think about it.

intellegence, because i agree with dain-ja-its problem solving. if you got the knowledge to put the proper patterns together, you got good music. certain notes and chordes go together, and certain ones dont, and never will. so you find the right combos you get good music....hmm still not as sure of this response as usual...makes sense to me now, but will it later? lol

*edit NOPE have to add. after you have the musical knowhow to make good music, THEN the creativity comes in and defines a GREAT artist. THE BEST artists, the legends, imo are the inovaters and inventers/experimenters, who make good music experimenting, and progressing the music, making way for new people to add on to their origonal idea's...ya intellegence THEN creativity

drive.

Everyone can make music, its about how much effort you put into learning the craft.

I am of the firm belief that everyone has music inside of them, it just takes a bit more effort for it to come out.

So, I guess the traditional sheet music doesnt come into play with Hardcore, or EDM in general. When I think of an artist, I think of someone who knows how to read music, not play around until you create some melody by accident (which can be a good thing, dont get me wrong here). I think a general knowledge of being able to read music, read beat patterns, and time signitures (Though most EDM is in 4/4 time) is needed to create music.

you would be surprised how many great musicians didn't know a bit about music theory, and yet they create some of the most memorable music ever.

I agree with Dain-ja: making music is about "problem solving"

you can be inspired and come up with the greatest riff, but when the inspiration leaves, all you have is your experience and intelligence to complete the job

No. I've met people that haven't got a note in them and never will have, regardless of the effort they put in.

I know producers that are happy with what they produce as are the people that like what they produce but

it's bland, unimaginative, empty drivel.

They 'experiment' with different notes to try to be different. It's so bloody obvious what they've done.

There isn't the slightest hint of any 'inspiration', genuine originality, true creativity or any spirituality.

It's just 'well produced' crap and it's *sigh* ....depressing that they get away with it.

I could give examples but won't.

Yeah, some people are entirely tonedeaf so it'd be hard to write music.

However, they could theoretically do it by studying music theory and applying those principles.

being a great engineer doesn't make a person a great musician.

As with anything, some people have a natural talent for it (imo: Scott Brown, Darwin, etc) but others have to work at it or put more effort in and some people just completely suck at it. The real answer to your question is that there is no definitive answer because so many factors come in to play.
