One thing taught in martial arts is also how to stop a reversal from happening to you.

Lately I've had this urge to try cannabis though (or at least, some sort of psychoactive drug, like LSD... though you can't exactly smoke that!).

again, all i was saying was that defending yourself against cigarette smoke with a knife is a little extreme
im sure that in the situation, the only way to get them to back off was knife.
good job they didnt have any guns on em eh..or if they had knives themselves
could have escalated quite quickly..

TheOneNOnly probably dosn't know martial arts so until he does a knife is the best he can do. If the people in question had knives or guns then they'd have still had them wether or not he had one himself so it's not really an issue. He's still better prepared. And no unfortunately in reality everything is not 'happy and dandy'. In an ideal word carrying a knife should not be something anyone should have to do, or do because they want to. But in reality people will try and hurt you, rape you and anything else you can think of so it's just a matter of you not letting it happen, because you sure as hell can't rely on people having a conscience. In an ideal world a child shouldn't have to see that kind of behaviour no matter old they are, but in the world we live in there could be much worse consequences if you aren't able to defend yourself. In this case he has to think about 2 peoples safety.
I'm not being cynical and i don't think it is true for the majority of the world but the truth is that no matter how little of these people there are, they do exist. I wouldn't personally carry a knife and it's not something i've ever thought about or want to think about. His reasons though are completely valid.

Used to smoke, started at 13 and a half, got up to almost a pack a day then quit last year. Started off with Marlboro Reds, then Camels, then Pall Mall, then I started smoking Pall Mall unrolled tobacco for a while, then back to Marlboro Reds, then I quit.
