any gathering of people centered around listening to and dancing to electronic music, as played by a set of live djs. Originated in 1989 in the UK as underground, often illegal gatherings in abandoned warehouses. Often characterized by the positive, psychedelic atmosphere, influnced often (but not always) by drugs and casual sex.

I agree. Freeform, although different from Old Skool rave music, had kept it's rave like quility. Upfront Hardcore (Raverbaby ect) is more club music, just faster.

I guess rave music is electronic music that flips the bird to commercialism. Music that is either to fast, hard, noisy, whatever, to have commercial appeal.

Rave music to me is defined by the early 90's, 'pots and pans' breakbeat, with synthesizers and acid lines. Often with female vocals and piano lines, and plenty of sampling.
I always cringe when I watch American movies or TV shows and they show folk at a 'Rave', and they're playing trance or something. But then I guess a Rave event nowadays is different to Rave music.
Loving Kathryn's answer of casual sex ;-) How did I miss this? Wasn't this the hippie parties in the 60's and 70's? ;-)

I disagree, see my post. I've heard House, Trance etc etc played at so called 'Raves', and I wouldn't consider this music as Rave
