"Helium has a desnity of 1.79 · 10-14 g/ml at standard temperature and pressure. A balloon has a volume of 6.3 liters. Calculate the mass of helium that it would take to fill the balloon." Ok, all I have to do is convert the liters into milliliters and change the scientific notation into the original number, which gives 0.000179 · 0.0063. So the answer I get is 1.1277 · 10-6 (rounded off, 1.1 · 10-6).
What I don't understand though are the answers supplied by the program:
- 35,000 g
- 1.1 · 10-3 g
- 2.8 · 10-5 g
- 1.1 g
And it says the answer is the fourth one... surely this is some sort of mistake/typo? :(

Definitely sounds like a typo to me, I didn't understand a word of it.

Yeah, it's chemistry. Not into physics yet, that comes next year. Thanks for responding, 'preciate it.
My mom is also quite sure it's a mistake so she unassigned the question; now I can finally move on.

Home schooled (no I'm not religious).

I think it all matters to be honest... but then again, physics is more fun (more grueling, but still more fun)!

Its not really a typo, they have just worked the calculation to the next step and rounded it:
10 to the power (-6) = 1.0 × 10(-6)
(the parts in brackets are supposed to be powers. except this o0)
I think this i right, not really a mathemetition really.. or very good at literacy, can you tell? ;)

I dont know why you converted to milliliters, that is backwards. this is how I read it
1.79*10^-14 g*mL-1 * 1000 * 6.3 L
=
1.79*10^-11 g*L-1 * 6.3 L
=
1.1277*10^-10 g
all I can assume currently is that you have done a typo. Once you have fixed that, we can get further.

thought that looked wrong, density of helium is 1.79*10^-4 g/ml.
for some reason you divided by 1000 to get litres where you should have multiplied by 1000.
now, 1.79*10^-4 g/mL * 1000 * 6.3 L
= 0.179 g/L * 6.3 L
= 1.1 g
so this is what you did. you started with 6.3 L and said that equals 0.0063 mL, when it actually equals 6300 mL. so you ended up out by a factor of a million. hope that helps. the textbook can can be wrong occasionally, but more often than not its the user that makes the mistakes. The issue comes when your checking, you know the thought process of what you were doing so it looks right to your eyes when it isnt. that's not to say it can't be wrong, I had a fluid mechanics textbook where you would go and buy a lottery ticket when the supplied answer was correc, honestly it was an absolute joke.
and yes physics >> chemistry. Really, this question is a fundamentals physics question which deals with units, it is just dressed up as a chem question. the only chem thing about it is that it has hydrogen in it.

The density of helium there was just a typo on the forum post, but bugger!! I can't believe I screwed that up that bad! And I've been doing metric conversions with success for several months now.
Thanks Lilley!!!
