this has come up a couple times with me lately, and through out my raving life. as a DJ now and in the past as i was, i prefer to plan sets out for a gig. as do all most of my close friends. However there are many of the opinion that live sets should be random, so you can 'read' the crowd.
i like less **** ups and better planned out flow of a whole set myself, rather than someone, who may or may not be judging correctly a certain song or tyoe of song at a certain time. some say that talent is true musicality, i think planning out the flow of a whole set demonstrates musical flare more. just my quick opinion on it
what do you guys think/prefer?

Bit of both. There is no point in following a set path if the crowd aren't feeling it.
I have a rough idea of what I'd like to play andwhat I might switch to if things aren't going down well.

I used to have 'duos' of tracks I knew would go well together (so like 20 pairs of records)...allowed stuff to flow and still gave me freedom
now that it's CDs and that I'm way more busy with school/work, I don't even have time for that so I usually just go with the flow
If I had time I'd still have some 'pairs' sorted out though

Yeah, agreed with the previous statements.
Also, if you end up playing for longer than you're slotted, it helps to be able to improvise.

Same thing, and I also know what goes well together. When I used to play sets on KraftyRadio I improvised and played whatever I felt like playing. But when I record a set which I send around everywhere I usually prepare it.

ya middle ground is always best. i dont plan whole sets, but i do like to plan a bunch, or have certain mixes that can lead to a different planned set. i also dont spin live alot but most djs i MC for plan most of the set. and the few that dont, imo have less quality sets on average.
good to hear your guys' opinions though

I tend to have a rough idea of what I style I want to play and some idea which tracks I want in the mix but the rest is just made up on the spot and I switch styles quite often. Very rarely will I plan a mix.

I like it random, keeps things interesting, also I find that it allows for some discovery on what sounds well together.

when playing out it's usually better to know what will work together because you never know what your setup is going to be like. so I'd usually have an idea in my head of 3 or 4 tunes for each record that I could mix into

been awhile since ive done it for a crowd - but it would be whatever the mood seems to suit..
i have pieces that i enjoy mixing, "couples" as such, so those always get dropped
if im just DJing for myself at home just whatever i feel like :)

Kinky. I'd never have pictured you being into the live sex show scene.

Many things cross my mind but the thought of you butt naked knocking one out on the stage in front of a few hundred people isn't one of them
