Ok so im realizing my computer that i have might be dying, well it is... but really slowly...
It's case is ****ed up, missing a side panel, faceplate is gone, wires coming outa of it...
I found out that about half my hard drive is shot (havnt been checking up on things lately).... lost 1 gig of ram (just died randomly).... got 2 gigs left, one other stick is wigging out.....
I built it from 4 different computers about 2 years ago... this is what im running right now

Processor: AMD Athlom x 64 dual core
Memory:2 gigs, mixed
Display:19" widescreen (this is flickering, might die soon)
Gpu:On-broad GeForce 6100 (something, only like 256mb)

Windows wont install for some reason, so im on ubuntu.....

So what should i do, should i try and build this one back up, or should i get a good-ish notbook/netbook...
Im getting paid soon, but i really dont know what i should get, im hopefully going to college this fall, but i will have a desktop then, soooooo....... what would you guys do...
Btw im only going to be doing web, movies, music production(well messing), some photo editing..... and WoW
So maybe some help on what i should do, lol
Looking to spend under $400 (yes i know its a small budget, but all im going to get)

a notebook these days is def much more convenient and easier on the owner. i had my desktop where i went to college and it was hell carrying it around during the breaks. not only that, but it is much more useful and easier in college because of the amount of work, especially group work, the classes demands. the schools do have computer labs, but doing group work in those labs isn't the greatest because there are many distractions.

however, good luck finding a really good one for under 400. o you can use financial aid (loans or scholarships) on a purchase of a laptop so that helps out. just apply for all the scholarships you can u never know there are many cases where scholarships go unnoticed and have no applicants.

btw i got a friend who's in Anonymous it's pretty badass if i had the time and a friend who also had the time i'd join it too

i strongly disagree on the notebook is better opinion of latininxtc. parts are hard to replace nd most of the time its darned expensive. the only good thing bout it might be its usable practicly everywhere..

flickering screen might not be ur monitor atomsk.. could be that on-board card. get a proper card nd that shud be sorted. 2gb? hmm. if i remember it wos you who wants to jump from linux to win7 and such? why not see if you can put 4gb in there. its obvs if windows doesnt wants to install like this. the processor is a lil out dated but still good enough imho.

i'd say stick with your desktop and just do those upgrades i adviced ;) do check your gpu when you get a proper vid card cuz it sucks a lot more power then the on-board. these days i'd say go 550W or 650W. although.. not sure if thats the same as they use in the usa ._. prolly do..

this all together shudnt be to expensive. you dont need a 200 dollar vid card.. :p so..

insted of a long quote-athon

@latinixtc:
Im not in school right now, so no scholarship yet, im not sure if i want to do a loan at 16-17 yet....this is out of my pay check for this month

@Project-Industrial:
The flickering is the screen, i have had it '06 i think...
Im not looking for a replacement for my desktop, its just to hold me over or a backup if my tower dies...
Ive never said i wanted to go linux-win7, it was win7-linux.... win7 was running fine then randomly i get bad sectors on my hdd, then it stopped working.... my processor is fine for what im doing, i would update it but i dont have money for a new psu or a new gpu... i dont like bottle-necking
But for $250 i can get a netbook from wall-mart...

rowan.... i would love to hear your opinion, you always have a great side on everything :b

Wanna know my oppinion?? STAY AWAY FROM THE NET+NOTE BOOKS! lol... i have used soooo many of these cause i used to work in a computer shop. basically, they are nothing but trouble, and deffinatly not worth the money.
I would either buy a new laptop, if you want it to be portable, or just upgrade that computer, you only really need a new hardrive, case, and ram? the processor is a pretty fast one! oh, and windows might not install because it thinks the HD is not worth installing on if its almost knackered! lol..

but for doing your old on up, then it should cost about $150 max??? depends how much you want to upgrade.

Get all these, and fix all your problems (flickering monitor might be monitor, or the graphics card):

Processor and Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.305451
(Triple Core AMD, love AMD)

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227199
(4GB x2 2GB sticks)

HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
(640GB)

Graphics:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102829&cm_re=Radeon_HD_4650-_-14-102-829-_-Product
(Radeon HD 4650. Not the best but good enough for anything besides high end gaming)

$390 approx.

Keep your case, fans, PSU. Put in the new motherboard, RAM, Graphics, Processor, HDD and be fine.
