well there u go there was food next to him and u didn't even bother to ask if it was his!
and on top of that, you didn't have to sit there just b/c it was ur regular spot. it ain't like ur day is gonna collapse if you sit at the table b4 it!

It's the fault of your ignorance. Surely the 'responsible' thing would have been to ask if he'd finished. The fact he was still sitting there makes you look even more out of line.
His reaction might have been a bit much but you obviously came across as a bit of a dick for it to happen in the first place. More likely you were in a mood because somebody had the nerve to sit where you 'normally sit' so decided to make a point, in which case you're lucky you only have a (self inflicted) broken knuckle.

I don't reckon it was your fault, I'm sure it was just a big misunderstanding for both of you. He might have been in a bit of a mood and taken it badly!
I dunno what I would have done if he knocked chips out of my hand! Probably just, run away or stand there thinking "Uh oh, what do I do now, this is bad, this is bad."
If chips didn't solve the problem, nothing will! As the chips flew in the air you should have tried to catch one in your mouth! Just while he's confused at the situation you can jog moderately in the other direction!
