List tunes that have similar riffs...

Darren Styles Feat. Lisa Abbott - Getting Better (Re-Con) + Squad-E - Turn It Up

Flip 'n' Fill - Field Of Dreams (Hixxy Remix) + Hixxy - 2 Dream + Dougal & Gammer Feat. Cat Knight - Reach Out

Darren Styles vs Hypasonic - Baby I'll Let You Know + E-Logik & DNA - Kick Your Legs (Impact Remix)

Is it because the industry is lacking imagination, wants to pay homage to or simply coincidences?

i think its a very crude thing to do, to steal a riff and not credit the people who wrote it.

part of it has to do with the fact there's only so many chord progressions and lead patterns

some of those are just standard arpeggios so...

I beg to differ. Hardcore is not any more limited than any other genre. Sure, it follows a similiar pattern, just like all genres follow a pattern that defines their genre, but the possibilities are endless on what an artist can create to go over that pattern. It's whether the mainstream audience will like it or not that's the determining factor in how creative an artist will be.

A lot of musicians/composers copy riffs from previous works, so it's not surprising to hear it in Hardcore. Also what Dain-Ja said about there only being so many progressions / patterns.

I heard a hardcore track last year that had the same riff from Skydivin' and I noticed it right away :S found that amusing.. I wish I could remember what it was.

The roots of Hardcore were about much more than that, but that's not important. Why must there be limits? The only thing stopping innovation in Hardcore is producers and listeners attitudes. Yours being a perfect example. I'm pretty sure everyone knows, and doesn't give two shits, about my opinions of pidgeonholes and genres within genres, boxes within boxes etc. so i won't go on about.

Hardcore is as flexible a genre as any other, it's all about how people choose to make it, and most producers stick to 4x4, offbeat bass, supersaws, the lot.
