I agree fully. No one deserves to get in to heaven, since the bible (in most versions I've read) states that sin is equally apalling to god, meaning that there's no distinguishing between having ill thoughts and acting on them. But don't listen to me, I'm just a disgruntled atheist who's read countless religious books and found truth in none...

What is truth?!
Who defines truth?!
Why must you think your truth is the same as mine?!
Prove it's the truth!

i dunno, just from learning a thing or two in psychology over the years i realize that certain people have disorders and those people do things based on those disorders. not to say that the people who commit such crimes aren't responsible for them, but they aren't exactly what we would call rational decision makers either.

and i'm in no way defending serial rapists, but it's nice to think that we all go to a better place once this life is over. better than thinking the opposite i guess.

I just want him to qualify the statement.

The way I see it, an instituition has done quite a bit of study into the topic and said such and such. He has seemingly dismissed it out of hand, without any apparent study or reason other than it's "what he thinks".

I personally think the catholic church is full of it, but then i've done a fair bit of research to back up that standing. The way I see it, the catholic church is all about tradition and personal actions, going to mass, penance, don't eat meat on good friday, sacrements, confession, etc, all of which are somewhat necessary for salvation. As far as I can tell, the bible says no such thing. Baptism is not necessary for salvation, but a personal proclomation of your belief and in itself has no more or less influence on a persons salvation than the direction that my second toe on my left foot is pointing.

That middle question is a good one, often asked. This is my take on it.
There is subjective truth and objective truth.
subjective truth "the moon is bright tonight"
objective truth "2+2=4"

Now, when it comes to God(s) and religion, I don't think this is a subjective subject - sure, everyone has a different opinion, but there is only one right answer. Either there is God(s) or there isnt. People often ask why can't all gods be the same thing. The answer is because they are completely different, their character shown to us in each religions sacred writings (ignorance of eastern religions shown here). If they were all the same, God(s) would be so contradictory its not even concievable, -ie, there is only one god and many thousands at the same time, man cannot do any act to inheret salvation vs the actions of man are judged to determine their worthiness etc.

So we either have one true religion (which one?), or no true religions and they are all man made crap. Lets say for the moment that the God of the bible is real. If so, he is real for all people, and his character is as outlined in the bible. He through his risen son will judge all people according to the same measure - he is just and will judge justly. He wont make exceptions for those who make their own "truth" and end up with one different to what He has given. Why is this? Because we have full access to the His Word and the truth, ignoring that and choosing our own doesn't cut it. This is his truth as outlined in the bible, his word to humankind. Assuming it is his word given to us, then that is the truth, and He defines it.

As for proving it. Well, thats the hard part. I honestly think that the bible's explanation of sin and the rejection of God by humans more than adequately explains human character and their propensity towards evil. What I am not saying is that everyone is will at some point go out and start killing wantonly, but that the standard response to God and his word is one of rejection and through that we are all guilty of the murder of his son. It demonstrates human character as inherently evil rather than good, rather than the opposite which is a stance that many people take. If we were to walk around with our thoughts displayed for all to see, we would be lucky if one in a hundred thoughts is positive, derived from love rather than hate. That is pretty much the best I can do on that, woefully deficient I fear.

I think that covers everything you mentioned, please reply back, I love a good argument.

No, they aren't rational decision makers, you are correct. Hell, humans aren't rational decision makers - at least on the surface level. But there is still the choice between accepting God and rejecting God. That is what it comes down to in the end (I'm saying this out of my belief and your recognition of catholic doctrine) - It is not a matter of personal actions, but of our attitude to God. Everyone has fallen short of God's requirements and while God has offered us a way out, of complete forgiveness, but if we reject it, we will be held accountable to that and what we have done.

Yes it is nice to think that. But do you care enough to make sure or is it just a groundless hope?
