I think the main problem with the Labour vote here is history. Kirkcaldy and the surrounding area was a big part of the mining industry. In fact, most of Fife was. Miners were by and large Labour voters, and I suppose they regaled their kids with the same scaremongering stories about the big bad Tories, so they all follow on and vote labour because their dad did.
As with most of Scotland and the North East of England, the Tories are dreadfully unpopular up here too. Many will vote Labour to try and keep the Tories out.
Unemployment is also slightly higher than the national average here, as it is for most post-industrial towns. Without meaning to generalise, these people are also going to prefer Labour: they'll view them as more generous through the welfare state.
It's annoying for me that they continue to back failure, but it's something I'll have to deal with.
Seems to be the case for alot of post industrial towns and cities. The KLabour movement grew out of trade unions and everyone voted Labour within the mining towns and villages which is why places you suggested have a very large number of support for Labour and the Tories are feared and Thatcher is seen as a female Hitler.
Where I live there is a large support for the Lib Dems. The Bournemouth and Poole area is very mixed, Bournemouth grew as a seaside town for the rich and there are also many middle class areas but also rundown areas and larger estates.
Poole was working class but also has alot of middle class areas as well. Sandbanks is in the borough of Poole and one of the most expensive places to live in the world! There are a number estates in Poole but despite there so called reputaitions, they are far from the worse places in the uk and if you compare to the inner cities crime rates are low.
Lib Dem MPs are well respected and fear towards the Tories are low. Although the Bournemouth and Poole area follows the normal trends it has never lead the country in an overly good or bad way so the Lib Dems seem suited for us.
The biggest Labour strongholds tend to be parts of London and northen England & I can image parts of Scotland as you suggested and parts of Wales (The former mining towns of the valleys) tend to be geared towards Labour as well.

I have heard people who wanted Maggie dead which shows how sad people are. Sure she made some rash changes but was popular enough to withstand ten years. Most of the people who hated Thatcher was the hardcore Labour types who loved fighting with the Union (or their local football firm as well) most of them are now middle aged men with shaved heads and hate students and the middle classes along with the Tories and go on about the 80s all the time.
You get them down south as well, I have met a few and I am not fond of them. Alot of them are bullys and are the middle ages vesion of chavs as far as im concerned
