Yep. Pretty shit, huh?
It's really starting to make me wonder about Kevin Rudd. Not only did he try a much larger tax on specific (not all, just certain types of) alcohol, but now he just introduced a 25% tax increase on all tobacco. Obesity is the leading cause of preventable death in the world, and Australia is apparently the fattest nation in the world. By coincidence, obesity-related deaths leave very similar scars to that of tobacco-related death. Yet we will see no tax on fatty food, of course not, because that would lose too many votes.
17% is a minority to tax, and the tax isn't big enough to make a massive dent in your wallet, but it's enough to be really inconvenient.
You know, Australia used to be SUCH a good country.

Also to put my word on it, I don't think it's right to tax necessarily to stop people from smoking (it's their choice ffs), but to be taxed for the sake of it being a big industry (at least here, not sure there). But, to be truthful, I'm more liberal-socialist in the first place, so I think a lot of things should be taxed lightly to make a collective whole to be used to help fortify the infrastructure of a country, it's resources, it's people, it's nature, and the health of the country overall.
But like that'll ever happen effectively without greed and corruption.

100% off topic, but OneNOnly, I just noticed the CDs in your signature, it says in the description that the CDs are available for download but it doesn't have a link... can you hook me up? I like the idea of a happyhardcore.com CD lol
And for the sake of making this post somewhat relevant, I think smoking should be an occasional stress relief, smoking enough that a 25% tax increase seriously affects you, you have bigger problems. I smoke about a pack a semester, they cost $10 here in Chicago as opposed to $4 back in Missouri, and it doesn't matter to me where I buy them because I smoke so rarely. Of course I'm just going to get the standard smoker's rage that accompanies any such comments...

Tobacco and alcohol are the easiest way for the government to get more money. Especially alcohol tax rises every time our economy slows down.
There are actually some politicians here that have suggested a special tax on unhealthy food, love it when people try to force their lifestyle onto others.
Though we've never had a 25% increase :O Here they raise it little by little and hope nobody notices. ATM here its 15,13e / 1000cig's + 50 % of the price.

at the very least, there was a consideration of a soda tax here in the US to help pay for some of the health care cost. i'm not entirely sure if it was passed or not. the tax would've been about 3 cents per 12 fluid ounces.
obviously taxing sodas won't make a nation healthier. the cost of alcohol and cigarettes rarely deters a person from drinking or smoking. funny thing too that soda tax would affect lower income families more, as they are the ones that spend more of their money for sodas when ordering meals at fast food restaurants.

Its $20 for a single pack here now. Nation wide. And we have pretty much the same dollar value atm.

Depending on the brand, you're looking at GBP 6.50 over here. Well, in London anyway. Although, I don't think there's that much regional variation.
20 AUD is absolutely fcuking outrageous.
In a way, I wish they'd whack the tax up like that over here. Say to 20 a box. I would have no choice but to quit.

Smokers, drinkers and drivers are the perennial easy targets to make money. It allows them to make more money without irking everyone by putting up their income tax - people tend to notice that a bit more. They can also peddle the old 'responsibility' bollocks as well when doing so.

Maybe the rise in public spending as a result will be worth it.

Sounds like the UK. Just wait until you get loads of foigners taking your jobs and a rise in crime rates when thugs get let out of prison early on 'good behavior'
That was the UK in the 2000s. Now were in the 2010s and in 2 days time it will all change!

Smokers cost less to the health care system then non smokers, even before taking into account the taxes paid through cigarette tax.
