Creation of the 303 sound, as Acid has always had a big effect on me from the older songs, to newer remakes of the same nature:
Also another big one is the progression of Trance from all of it's stages, I've really had a hard time finding a Trance song I haven't liked in all of it's branches (Psy/Hard/Etc):
I still think Trance is one of the best genre's in it's amazing ability to always interest me in how it branches off. I still can't get over this song after a couple of years listening to it from 2:30 on, amazing.

I'm not sure of the exact time (1400-1500?), but the invention of the 7 tone scales, with the tones and semitones, definitely was the turning point in music history, so much that they are the same scales we all use now, and probably will keep using for centuries to come.
Also the influence of black music in western music, which lead to ROCK N ROLL!
which to me is the grandfather of ALL modern popular music, yes even the eletronic music.

Of the 20th century, The Beatles were the most notable influence, that's pretty much unquestionable so you should definitely mention them. They invented pop music, and the first ever music video. When i say the most notable influence i mean where 'popular music' is concerned.
