Hey guys, I'm fresh to the forums hoping I can be assisted here.
I discovered hardcore years ago, back in the 7th grade I believe, when my friend threw me a stream to DJ Comet's Mix 11 and then well... the hardcore world opened its gates after that!
Now I appreciate music so much, I find it all really beautiful. I have all these ideas burning through my skull, and I'd like to start mixing/producing tracks.
I see guys on youtube like DJ Ravine, and I'm curious as to how one starts out DJing?
I mean, if one were to get all the gear. How would you learn to use it all? Does it all come from experimenting? How do DJ's start out and learn their stuff?

To be honest Hardcore is one of the easiest genres to mix. Buy a set of turntables, a mixer and no more than, say, 8 UK Hardcore records and, with a bit of practice, you should have the hang of it in no time. From there on in it's just a case of perfecting your skills. It will take a while before you can mix like Ravine, but you'll get there.

start saving money now.
best bet would be find someone that has turntables near you and see if they'll let you practice on their rig.
it is fun but it's probably one of the most expensive hobbies...although I was able to recoup some of it by loaning my cdjs out to parties =P

I was lucky enough to have a brother who mixed so I just used to practice on his before I got mine. Took a short while to work out about loops and timing and then it all fell into place.
As for producing that takes a lot longer. :P Grab a DAW that you like the sound/look of and get ready to geek out hard haha.

If you really just want to dip your toes in the water to see how it feels download virtual DJ and play around. You can get the feel of mixing and see if you feel like sinking a small fortune into it.

There was actually a very informative book about DJing I saw at book stores a few years back that helped me get started. However, there's no better advice than just start mixing. Develop a style and record a few mixes and give them to anyone who's willing to review your work. Eventually you'll know after a few weeks if mixing is something you're willing to invest time in, it's not a cheep hobby. When you think you're ready start asking to play at your friends' and families' parties and see how the crowd reacts to you. Being a DJ is not on my career path but I still play at family events but I've since stopped playing hardcore in public.

good advice, also - the bit in bold - never a truer word spoken lol
well cheeper if you're mp3...little lot more expensive if you're old skool vinyl like some of us ;)

u can hate on him all you want, but he has a point. not a good idea to use programs such as vdj from the start. it's best that you start off with cdjs and/or vinyl. programs such as vdj, serato, torq, traktor, etc should be an accessory to your mixing, not a handicap

It's free to download vdj and try to mix a few songs, you don't HAVE to use the sync button, and it gives him, at the very least, something to do while he waits for the $2000 of equipment he just bought with no idea whether or not he'll like djing to get shipped. I don't understand why everyone on here hates software so much, I mean, I know meatheat hates ME which is where that came from, but they really aren't that bad. In fact, almost every top tier DJ uses scratch live or something similar with timecode vinyls.

Yes DJs do use Timecoded Vinyl, i do too, but that is a very different meidum to something like VDJ. With a DVS it's not just a case of a few clicks of the mouse, you still have to be able to mix.
Oh and well done with MeatHEAT. Not heard that one before, most will take the low ground; something like dickhead or Meatball i think Wilky once used lol.
