The overall product that you get when you buy a record is far better than the icon you get on your desktop when you buy an MP3. Using vinyl is fun and some would say it's more of a challenge and some tracks still only get released on vinyl, plus the older tunes are easier to come by on record than unmixed CD's or digital downloads.

I would still use vinyl but it's a bit too expensive compared to MP3 and the sound quality on digital is far better IMO. I'm really proud of my record collection and I doubt I would ever sell it but my days of mixing on vinyl are gone. I enjoy using CD's more than vinyl and I even started to learn to scratch on them this evening, it's surprisingly easy so far.

i've always kinda felt that if you buy the vinyl, there should be able to get the mp3 for free with it...

would come in rather useful later when and if i move to mp3...i mean i just spent all that cash on buying the records....i mean whats that...1300+ records.... 5 a pop...

now the whole lot again but digitally?....even if they were only 1...thats a lot of money to spend allllll over again lol

I know what you mean Rowan. I've been kind of lucky really because during my change over from vinyl to digital my music taste kind of changed so I'm not that interested in trying to get digital versions of all of my records. The older ones yeah I would like to have them but not the stuff past 2000.

ive shifted my thinking in the same way as blu-ray i think

the newer stuff is probably worth just getting on Mp3 - say 2005+...whereas the older stuff may not even get a digital release anyway (or may be off a dead label) so just buying vinyl that is pre 2005...or focusing on stuff that wont go digital/just for sentimental value..

in a way its nice to think that there IS an end to my record collection, otherwise i could spend my whole life collecting lol

You've still got 44 years or so to beat that bloke :p

On topic: I just love vinyl, must be the hands-on aspect. Also, having records feels like more of a collection than an mp3 folder on my computer. I've got a bit of a way to go if I want to beat Rowan though :P I probably have a tenth of his collection, at most. Maybe I should count them!

Also, I got my Isotonik EP and Hurt You So 12"s yesterday \o/

That video was touching. feel so sorry for that guy.

Now,

Let me ask everyone this: Why does techno, a genre of music made on computers, Using the latest technology, Still made on vinyl?

A genre always ahead of its time, distributed on such a primal format?

I would expect all Techno music to be mp3s by now, in order to keep with times, and be as current gen as it possibly can in order for it to keep up with how futuristic it sounds.

Techno is put on vinyl more then any other genre nowadays (so it seems). Rock stopped doing it, Blues stopped doing it, Hip-Hop is producing less and less vinyl. But techno on vinyl is still strong.

Why is that?

Because EDM is still so DJ intensive. Vinyl is the industry standard for DJs, and nobody wants to dance to music that isn't mixed. Therefore, the most DJ intensive genre will have the strongest vinyl market. Also, you get no respect in this damn community if you use anything but vinyl. The vinyl guys are bitching at the CD guys who inevitably respond "at least I'm not using software like that VDJ guy!" But alas, I don't care enough about it to invest that much money and be a "real DJ" just to get people to stop bitching at me, I'm a student first and a DJ second. Guess I went off on a bit of a tangent >.>

Even calling it 'IDM' is pushing it a little. Anyway it's good to see an American telling another American the correct name haha.

Also, how come you think all of it is made purely on computers? That is certainly not true at all fortunately. One of the reason electronic music sounds so bad at the moment is the amount of lazy pure software productions.

i've known the word techno since i was 10, but i remember it being the subgenre of electronica (now edm for short) since the beginning. i've always corrected ppl, and still do.

and to add to the discussion, i just got a dj set but i'll b mixing using flash drives & cdjs. I won't be doing vinyl any time soon, if not ever, b/c i'm not trying to become an int'l dj, just more for my own benefit.

but i do have much respect for vinyl djs and hope that every1 is open-minded on the idea of at least trying it b4 dismissing these djs as outdated. also, most vinyl djs already know how to mix with cdjs. they're more versatile than cd djs. and yes using a progam does most of the work for you. vdj has a beatmatch button, torq has a sync button, and many ppl who use serato out there are always staring at the screen. learn to dj w/o these programs 1st.

indeed, not all using computers, lots of Dance music has organic elements

hense why I think its a bit daft calling it "E" DM, of course, its "EDM" cause the people love their 'cool' abbreviations
anythings better than getting it massively wrong though

...i'll just stick with 'Dance Music' just like the rest of the online media stores on the web :P

vinyl isnt exclusive to dance - Hip Hop still use it a huge amount
styles other than Dance/Hip Hop dont really require DJ's, so the home-user equipment and pressing has been phased out over the years.
