Ok, I've always been told that to move up in the UK, it has to be based on your father's last name. If I were to move to the UK, or Europe period, and being a teacher, what would my socioeconomic culture be like?

I don't think I understand. What exactly is being based on your father's last name?

are you trying to say that you believe your last name will determine what kind of social status you will have? that's the only thing i've gotten from it. i hope not man b/c i would hope that something like that would be outdated in a place such as the UK

If thats what you ment then its not true your last name doesnt really mean anything there are popular last names like smith n stuff but it doesnt mean your last name will determine how much money you have etc

My surname Clapp derives from Danish culture when loads of them came over after the Battle of Hastings occured and William the Conqueror was in power... apparently :D
I dont think it ever does rely on socioeconomic stuff, at the moment. Brown wanted to introduce a qualification points policy, but atm I think its a case of as long as you have a clean criminal record, you stand a decent chance...
ps. Surnames a load of rubbish. I know people with the surname Butler, who have just as much right to being in the country as someone the surname, for example, Al-Karihb...

My surname is Macdonald. Obviously Scottish heritage but i don't get many people throwing plates of Haggis my way.
The only way to move up the social ladder when you arrive in Britain is to buy a baseball cap, tuck your tracksuit bottoms into your white socks and drink dry, strong cider from the tesco value range. I believe the Queen does this.

My last name is Nodland. It's just a place outside of Egersund, which is in southwestern Norway. Where the name of the place comes from, I have no idea. And I have no idea what this thread is about, either. :)

lol, it's something we're told in schools, at least our histoy teacher told us that a person in the UK's status/social class is determined on how high of a status their last name is held. Since I don't have any family over there, I was just wondering if I were to move over there, would I automatically be at the bottom of the ladder, per say, and not be able to move up.

Maybe in the old days, but I don't think that if you go there and try to get a job, they'll say "sorry, your last name sucks, good luck elsewhere" :p Just doesn't make sense. To be safe, move to Norway instead.
