Based on personal experience (and experience by those I know) I can recommend Gateway and ASUS (unrelated to the Eee PC). No matter what brand you get though, I recommend grabbing a refurbished and/or used laptop; not that you're required to, I'm just one of those darn dumpster-diving, tree-hugging hippies!
I strongly advise against buying anything by HP or Compaq. Their quality has gone down the toilet and into the sewage.

Why not buy one second hand? Although used Macs seem to have high prices as well.
On a semi-related note, the laptop I use is a Gateway EC1433u... bear in mind that it's nowhere near recommended specs for DAW work.
Cheers.

This most definitely. Acer is pretty good too if you're not looking to spend a lot.

Here are 3 that will run Fl9 with most vst smoothly, better than my desktops so youll be fine.
Just depends on what you want it to look like.

First question you should ask yourself is do you really need a laptop? Many people buy one over a desktop when they don't have any real reason to. You will get much more power for your money buying a decent desktop PC and they don't suffer from the same overheating issues when being used for high drain applications.
Basically I would avoid a laptop completely if this is dedicated music production PC. Even if you had 1000+ to spend.

Buying a low spec, overpriced computer AND second hand, is just screaming stupidity :p
Anyway my sister got a Compaq G62 for 500e, with your price range theres no real difference between the computers.

Ah got ya, fair enough then mate. Well you'll probably get on fine if you're just using it to get some ideas down on FL but expect to struggle a bit on a laptop at this price if you have a full track on the go, you would likely have to bounce a lot of stuff down and that isn't always ideal.
I've got an IBM Thinkpad and an Acer, they have both been very reliable and have worked well. I've heard a few people say they have had trouble with Acers but I use mine for serato and it gets taken to paties/bashed about and is working well so make of that what you will!

It was just a suggestion for if he had his eyes set on one. Some people I know are either Apple or nothing.
