Sorry but in need of some help again. I'm using Windows XP & just lately Windows Installer keeps popping up everytime i start my computer. It slows the speed of the computer down to an almost standstill. I've unchecked Windows Installer & everything is back to normal now but obviously when i want to install anything i have to start Windows Installer again which then slows everything down again. Something must be trying to install but i have absolutely no idea what this might be. How can i fix this so that i can leave Windows Installer on without receiving that message everytime & without it slowing the performance of my computer down?

Many thanks.

We had that many problems with our PC's that I changed from Windows 7 back to XP, then XP started to fall apart so I've gone to Linux. Best thing I've done to a PC on years, I wish I'd had gone to Linux years ago.

I expect whatever it is that is trying to install can be seen in MSCONFIG

Start > Run > msconfig

you'll notice "startup" and "services" tabs

it'll be something in the "startup" tab, but often some of these things rely on non-microsoft services in the "services" tab. try disableing different items in the "startup" tab and restarting till you find the one that is causeing you trouble

you can always turn them all back on, so no harm done.

hope that's a little more help than mortis's lifestory ;)

*edit* also check that your "Startup" folder in your start menu is empty, as that will cause programs to launch on startup also!

Linux is a great OS, if you only use the PC for internet, email, videos, music and office. As soon as you need to do something more complicated, you need to really know what you're doing.

That's all we use it for really. Don't play games on the PC much and wine hq can run cubase plus linux has a few production programs so that's my music writing sorted. I can always dual boot to XP if I need windows for anything more complex.
