I had my first fiddle with a digital SLR on the weekend and im hooked. The control you have over photos is riiiiiiidiculous.

Interesting note both my dad and my sister are passionate photographers and both ahve several SLR's... I've already got their take on it now im looking for more opinions.

I just want an entry level digital SLR... something good that wont blow my bank.

So i was looking at a Canon eos 1000d... and for the price (<400 pounds with an 18-55mm IS lens) it's looking pretty damn good.

Has anyone got one or can make recommendations?

I think one of the measures of a good camera is its f-number. It refers to focal length, but beyond that I dont know what it means. I learnt about it in graphic design @ college.

F-number?
I know the lenses have a "f-number" but the camera itself usually dose not.. Well as far as I know. The relative aperture is mostly for the lenses itself, its like how much the lens can move and focus. So for close up shots where you want the subject and the background visible you want a high "f-number". So for a lens you want around a f/4-f/8, that would be good for medium to long shots
I dont know that much about relative aperture so make sure you look it up to be 100%.

As for the camera, the 1000D would be fine for you, as you are just a starter. If you want to blow a few more hundred.. the 500D is a bit better. A better sensor, a slightly higher pixle size, a bit higher colour filter.

But both are about the same in everything else, both have "live view" which is a good thing. Just look at reviews and try to go to shop and test them out before you buy them, and look at pictures and videos taken by the cameras and lenses to make your final choice.

Check out this web series, the talk about the some of the cameras and tips for taking pics and videos with the shit. It is pretty entertaining.

Btw, what will you be taking with the camera? It might help a bit to know...
Also what did they say you should get?
