You can guess what I use.

I have nothing against Mac OS, it's extremely user friendly, and offers some good features, but I despise Apple. If I'm going to pay anything over $300 for a computer, I want the absolute RIGHT to open that thing up and do what I want to it without voiding all warranty.

I love Linux but due to a dodgy graphics card I've had to switch over to Vista again

We have a mac g4 20' in the family room, despite it only being 5years old, only like 1% of mac apps will install on it due to os x tiger... so all its good for is web browsing :/

That's another place where Apple gets you. You either have to get the most up to date one, or you're screwed! That's one thing Microsoft was at least good at, they didn't stop supporting their major applications on most of their old operating systems.

Whenever you can, get a NVIDIA GPU. They're very open with their drivers, therefore communities and major Linux Distros are able to work with them (if need be), and can be installed and used without a problem. Never had a major problem with any of their cards running Linux, especially on my Ubuntu partition.

It was more a problem on my windows hdd that ended up damaging the linux one. I'll fix up the linux hdd when I get a chance. I'm on kubuntu, I think it looks a lot nicer than ubuntu.

Kubuntu is a lot more friendly if your coming off Windows, that's for sure.

apple computers are higher priced because you're paying for what is essentially a finely crafted piece of art! and with losedows computer you have to really turn out the cash every time an update is available, as well as for how often hardware breaks... see that with macs? nope! and why would you want something as old as linux? xD it's not compatible with anything, barely any software is available for it, and plus it's really buggy!

that was the biggest pile of shit ive heard in a long time.

Ive never paid for a windows update but i think its funny that a mac user can complain abot price, of all things.

i've never had hardware on my PC break.... ever

You want linux because it gives you more control over everything that happens with your computer. similar diffference between driving automatic or manual.

The compatibility issue was an interesting one to bring up though, seeing as macs are notorious for bad compatibility...

  @ Andy's response

i can't speak for laptop experience, but as far as desktop goes, windows ftw. i've had my desktop for 8yrs now and the only thing that's broken down is my cd burner, but that's b/c i got frustrated w/ it and slammed it inside, and now it's stuck lol

i never had to shell out any $$$ for software updates, windows does that automatically. I don't have Windows 7 or vista, I still have XP, and for what i use the computer, I don't need those, just the highest upgrade of XP, which the computer upgrades that itself. anything else that needs updates (windows media player, flash, java, etc) can be found for free online.

the only thing that i've invested $$$ for the computer is an external dvd burner, 2 external hard drives, a new mouse (which i haven't opened yet), a printer, and more RAM memory. i'd say that's less than 600, and that's within a span of 8yrs

yea the damn thing is slow, and i'm always running out of space but i can't imagine that no one else has had a mac laptop/desktop for that long, or has invested less money into upgrades that is anywhere close to that amount
