The new Bonkers 9 cover heralds the end of happy hardcore once & for all, I love upfront too, dont get me wrong & I know this is gonna remain the way forward as a result, I've been thinking (yes it did hurt!)
Why not have the old skool room as old skool/happy hardcore room?
many of the DJ's in old skool play both anyway, & this would surely keep everyone happy! (pun intended!)
Hardcore family never dies.

Maybe. I think that Old Skool now goes as far Back as 1998 which at the time was true Happy Hardcore. But I dont think the new Bonkers cover will mean that happy hardcore is dead! Think of 'You're Shining'. Thats brand spankin new for 2002 and thats happy hardcore! A lot of the material that Dougal is producing is Happy Hardcore. It isnt dieing and hasnt and never will m8.
I think that we just call all the different styles associated with the scene now as Hardcore. The term Happy Hardcore I feel doesnt get used very much any more. I dont think its a problem because regardless, hardcore is hardcore whether you call it happy or not!

Hmmm ... I guess the battle's lost already. Everyone's decided that Hardcore/UK Hardcore and Happy Hardcore are different things, because of when they were made (although, for the life of me, I can't hear enough of a difference to change the name). Are we witnessing the birth of a new genre? How exciting :P
*sigh*
.. and here I was marvelling at the fact that HHC/UKHC/HC was one of the only genres bucking the trend against all the senseless pigeonholing. I just hope it doesn't go the way of trance, where they've "identified" about half a dozen different "genres" of music, nevermind that THEY ALL SOUND THE F***ING SAME!!!

sub-genres = division, division = clash of interests -> sub-genre wars. eg. "ewww i can't stand that Hard-tech-acid-house crap, gimme some random stab-punk-trip-house anyday".
IMO it's all just hardcore and as long as the dj's are changing it up with a bit of everything it'll probably stay that way.
"Well it just goes on and on and you don't stop, party people winding up and keep on going til you drop YEAH!"

hardcore in any form is not dead, it will always be alive in my heart if not yours. Ever been to a rave where the 2000 onwards stuff was being played and then a classic set comes in? i have, people leg it in when they realise whats happening, there is not one person sitting there or just standing, it goes crazy. just because it is not being made alot or not at all doesnt mean it is dead, is old skool dead?
i recon classic sets from all eras should be played at raves, we always put to much emphasis on the present, forgeting the past, but its there we came from and looking back will help us to understand what we are about.
as for the change, in more and more tunes produced i am starting to hear the origional ideas that helped make this scene so great, but in a more grown up sence, we have moved on but happy or not it is all just hardcore, its got the same backbone of ideas, happy hardcore just summed up how we all felt, and i still feel happy listening to all hardcore whatever the era

i understand, but what i'm worried about is that we might get too caught up with labels and names which, as skeenip points out so well, leads to division. i'm glad that the HHC/UKHC/HC (f*** i'm getting tired of typing that) scene has managed to progress so far and yet maintain the unity that is so easily lost when things start to change. i hope it continues that way, no matter what we call the music

^^ yeah but HHC only has 3 letters :P
but i think you missed my point here ... you people talk about HHC and UKHC as if they're different genres of music. are they? i mean sure there's been a shift in the sound, and a wider variety in the types of songs, but is that enough to justifiably identify new genres of music?
in the end though it doesn't really matter how many different genres you recognise, so long as it doesn't lead to division/disunity: "ewww i can't stand that Hard-tech-acid-house crap, gimme some random stab-punk-trip-house anyday" ... this would crack me up, but i've actually *heard* people talk like this. it's ridiculous sometimes.

i dont know how were having this discussion, its like we are discussing our different views, but we have the same view, hardcore should not be segergated, we should think of it as hardcore and forget the happy, trancey, uk bits
im going to put up a post with a pertition where people can say the lable bits are rubbish and therefore we should give it up, we might then be able to send it to big raves so there arenas are not named stupid things, just hardcore the way it should be

it's wierd really, everyone's calling for the end of sub genres of hardcore. i saw a post about mixing a sharkey tune into something like shooting star,i'm gonna back it up here and say they won't go together, coz they're a totally different style. 1's fast and energetic while the other's a sing-along tune,it just doesn't work.
so i like to leave it at happy hardcore,trance-core if you wanna call it that (eg raver baby releases) and freeform. any tune coming out today is likely to fall into 1 of these catagories (with the odd exception)

quote: i vote everyone stfu's about genres sub geners or whatever, in theory it is all hardcore, in practice its far different, something like Energy & sharkey - take me up, to shooting star... theres a lot of difference, enough difference than there is between progressive trance & trance....
although,, people always will make up there own categorys, i just say i play Dark hardcore/Freeofmr (not really definable)
but you cant just call it ALL hardcore, it is... but all forms of trance are trance, all forms of house are house, but they have sub geners, and they general need them too

yeah, but all too often there *are* arguments. people argue about different types of trance, different types of house, even different types of gabber. it's sad that music, which should bring people together, tears them apart instead. names don't matter. unity does.
