I couldn't swim when i was younger but my sister could & really well too. When we used to go on family holidays i used to just stand about & splash while my sister would get all the attention as she was swimming end to end. Little old jealous me got fed up & taught myself & by the age of about 12 i could finally swim & was pretty fast too.

I always thought it was funny, my parents paid for my sister's swimming lessons when we were kids but never me. I guess they figured I just needed to man up and learn on my own. lol

I too am a non-swimmer.
Chilhood epilepsy meant schools wouldn't take the risk and didn't really have the money or inclination to get private lessons. Can't say it's particularly affected me though.

i kind of taught myself how to swim at age 12, but wasn't that great doing it. it's been almost 15yrs since i've been in a pool.
been in the beach of galveston here and never again! the water is nasty! floated close to the coast off of the bahamas and that was incredible!

I'm not a big fan of swimming or deep water. When I got my tonsils removed, they inserted tubes into my ears to help relieve pressure from sinus infections. Unfortunately, the tubes turned out to be a waste of my life as they made me afraid of water for quite a few years. If water got into my ear, it would go through the tube and into my inner ear where it would cause intense pain. The tubes didn't fall out for years so I avoided water and I'm still wary about immersing my head in water.

I have a fear of deep water... I always stay where I can touch the bottom. I'm very cautious if I'm on a boat (rarely happens) or close to a place where I know the water's deep.

The fear of water is very rational. You could be a perfectly good swimmer in a pool and be a total bitch to the sea when you swim open water.

I can't swim! When I was young I was terrified of water for some reason. Didn't like getting splashed with it or anything! As I grew up a lot of that vanished. I had school swimming lessons in primary school but they were a disaster. I have got a BRILLIANT story about a kid taking a poo in a public swimming pool when my mum decided to make me try and learn to swim again when I was 13, one of the funniest things ever.
I'm not scared of water now but I'm definitely not confident with swimming. I walked really far out into the ocean when I was a lot younger and kept going before it got too deep and was fine with that, I don't like how suddenly deep swimming pools can get but the sea is fine for me, it feels a lot more natural. Either way I'd only walk and not swim. Also swimming pools you have people splashing water at you which I still don't like.

Haha well don't just tease us, tell us it! Splashing also really bothered me, i guess anything to do with water that made me feel uneasy.
