So I have been having a problem with a redirecting virus that redirects my search results from any search engine and also has random popup tabs of sites I never request. I thought I got rid of it but it came back after I had to change internet settings.
So now it redirected to a site that downloaded the dreaded xp security 2011 program that is a fake virus scanner and now I cant access internet or even use the real malware scanner I have on it (I'm currently using the net on my phone)
My options are very limited bc this virus restricts me from doing so much trust me I've tried everything I can and I'm left with buying a new computer or restoring this one to factory setting. The latter is better atm since I would be dissatisfied with any computer I get since I don't have enough for the one I really want.
The problem with restoring computer is the original reinstallation disk is damaged and don't want to run into any problems whith it if I star now. I did find someone selling one for a dell xp, but it is for service pack 2 and I have service pack 1. Will thiswork or do I need an sp1 disk?
Thanks for any responses and sorry for the long post but I'm tripping out over here lol this program is frustrating!

if my memory serves me correctly a SP1 key should work with an SP2 disk - with Dell you should be alright, some of the HP restore disks look for a low level BIOS tattoo and will refuse to install if they dont see the correct setup and spit a nice "WRONG MACHINE!" error code back at you...
like i said you should be alright - are you sure you've tried everything though? (i know how much of a bugger the redirect's virus's can be, we used to have tons of them come in for repairs)
before you go round re-formatting and re-installing look into the latest version of SMITFRAUD
http://www.pchell.com/support/smitfraud.shtml (scroll down to where it says:download the following removal tools to your desktop and install them) download them all to a thumbdrive on a computer that does work, then restart your machine in safemode (F8 on startup) and install them and run them (or at least as many of them as you can). once you've doen all them, keep installing/scanning/uninstalling other internet security software until you have a clean computer! (Kaspersky, Avira, AVG, Webroot Spysweer (spysweeper used to be really really good at this type, so make sure to give that one a go) also delete your temporary internet files via IE, then delete everything in the temporary folderr (get to it by typing %TEMP% into the run box). fingers crossed dude!

Well I read a lot of topics on this specific one and in safemode it still will return. Everyone recommends the same method, BUT that mwthod requires a specific program or file that I don't have (exeregfix.reg I think), and even if I install anything new anytime I open a program in regular mode (not just antivirus programs but even the volume control, wmp & word) this virus pops up in place of it!
Ill give this guy a call so I can buy this cd its only for 20 its best solution right now instead of shelling out 1000 on a computer ill be unhappy with and wasting over 100 for windows 7 that my current computer isn't adequate enough to have

see, your other option is to take the hard drive out of the pc, and stick it in an external enclosure or a SATA/IDE to USB cable and hook it into another machine and run a scan on it via that (being careful not to browse the contents of it that is)

It's just a shot in the dark, but can you still access the run command (winkey + R)? If you can use it, navigate to where the executable for one of the SmitFraud removal programs is, and write it down.
Then run this command in the Run dialog: taskkill /im explorer.exe
Then paste in (or type in) the path to the removal program (it should look something like C:\Program Files\Program\program.exe) and hit enter.
I still have to recommend against buying that CD unless you're in a time critical situation.

I dont feel like reading everyones replies, so if someone said this, sorry..
On windows boot up into "safe mode with networking", you will be able to get onto your computer, and get on the internet to download some tools. The virus wont be able to boot up either.
Try out "Malwarebytes" and "spy bot S&D" both free, both will work.
If anything, both xp and 7 have a tool to restore to a date before the **** up.

Well if you had the cd before, or still have the key. ******* a copy of xp, as it's not illegal to if you have a key.

Go to a ... website. Download XP OEM. Install using the code thats in the sticker attached to the laptop. There shouldnt be any different OEM versions. AFAIK theres only Corporate, OEM and Retail versions. I bought an OEM for my mother and have used the same CD for my computers. I've also used a Acers XP code on other desktop computers with no problems.
Also i do go to fishy sites, and still haven't got any viruses. Be sure to install an internet security program before attaching any computer to the net.

i'm not in a huge rush to restore my old desktop so i'll just wait for the cd. i've transferred all of my files onto an external before I took down the desktop, which i'm surprised i was able to even do that. the only thing that will suck replacing is all of my bookmarks. does firefox keep your bookmarks as a file that u can transfer onto any other computer?
