What's up people.

I've been thinking for a while now, half-heartedly admittedly, that I'd like to do my own event one day. I'm approaching it (totally theoretical still, of course) as if it would just be a one off, and the cost/profit aspect is totally irrelevant. I would happily absorb a loss of 500 or something, to have a wicked night that was my doing.

I've got a venue in mind. It's in Vauxhall, London. My favourite little venue. It's got two small rooms, and a small smoking area. It's a really nice intimate little venue, perfect for a small rave.

So, this would theoretically take place at the end of 2011, start of 2012.

Here's a few things I'm going to throw out:

a) I know some of you on here are London based (or London journey-able), but not a huge amount. So, who would be up for coming to this? I'd like to get as many as you lot down there as possible!) And who would be up for playing a set or two? One room would be upfront UK Hardcore/freeform. One room Old Skool, breakbeat. That's just rough though/standard format.

b) Does anyone here have experience with putting on an event? Can you throw out some things that I need to consider that might not be obvious? Things I'm thinking of currently, very roughly, are: DJs/MCs, PA system, promoting, late night alcohol license, rental fee for venue, staffing for bar/door (usually covered within rental fee for venue, I believe, but could be wrong)

c) Once I get an idea of overall expense for something like this, I'll have a think about pricing for tickets - but at the moment, I'm hoping to make it a totally free event. I'm so not in this for the money. Just the experience and to hopefully deliver a banging night of hardcore to the ravers for free! (pills and alcohol will not be complimentary though, unfortunately)

So what do people think? Even if you can't or have no intention of coming - all thoughts are welcome.

Cheers girls.

P.S. I'm acutely aware that this is 'biting off more than you can chew' territory, but if you don't even give it some serious thought or investigation - you're never gonna know.

I'm 100's of miles away but you can count me in mate! This sort of thing has been suggested many times but never really come off so would be great if it could happen. I'm sure there are a few things i could help with so will add my thoughts later.

Legend Dean.

You have any experience playing out mate?

Well, I genuinely think I have a shot at doing this. I'm certainly serious about it. That said, I'm not naive enough to think that there's nothing I haven't considered, and there are going to be massive obstacles, and large organizational efforts required.

Not to mention spending a few quid.

I should have the minimum bar spend covered. If I can convince (should be easy enough) all my mates to come (non hardcore types) the minimum bar spend will be covered. They are thirsty boys.

Be well up for it and would play a set too. I'm just outside of London.

Pay a lot of attention to the system. Too many cut costs here and it's just as important as any DJ or MC. What's the point in going to see the artists you like if it all sounds like shit anyway! You will need someone there who really knows how to set it up too. Lots of people own big systems and have no clue how to set them up properly.

Promoting is definitely something that you will need to hammer hard and start far in advance. A big name does help but not sure if you really want to go down that route being your first party n all... Maybe try and get the venue to do drink promotions and advertise that as well, some places will agree to this.

Cant commit, because my life's going to be turned upside down in September, but I definitely want to be there!

I've raved at this place a few times mate, and the system is excellent. I'm confident it's included in the club hire fee, and even if they don't provide someone for technical set-up, I have a mate that runs a business in PA systems and he can sort me right out, probably for free.

I'll be all over the promotion side of things, but I'm confident I can get at least a hundred people without trying. Mates and mates of mates etc. As I said, I'm not in it for the cash, and just about a good night - obviously you need ravers for that, but that's one thing any first time event is going to live in fear of "is anyone gonna come??!!?"

I'm quietly optimistic, but not naively so.

Yeah, I did have it in my head that you'd done a shit load of stuff, but couldn't be sure. Never actually spoken to you about it properly.

I'll have you down for two sets than, shall I? One current, one Old Skool? (there's two rooms at the place I'm looking at).

Thank you very much for that mate, and I look forward to your PM :-)

The club I was thinking of was Club Life (formerly Factory). I fired of an e-mail to them yesterday, but it looks like an old e-mail address, and no reply yet. Gonna get a mate back home to give them a call for me soon to get an idea of potential hire fees.

Also had a PM from Gary over at In Your Head Records who said he'd be able to help me out on a whole range of things.

Looking like it could well happen.

LOVELY.

lol, although I'm willing to take a hit on the this (possible) event, I haven't got that kind of cash, I'm afraid.

I've just remembered I've got about a grand's worth of shares in my old company that I can liquidate. That should hopefully sort me for at least getting this underway.

Yes, yes yes yes and YES!! I love Vauxhall! What venue is it? I'd definitely be interested and of course I would be there! Give me a shout when you've got more info and stuff and I'll see what DJs and MCs would be up for it. I know quite a few London based MCs and DJs plus some south coast ones too, I'll spread the word for ya just let me know when you're ready.
